Peonies - if I take cut flowers from the shrub will I get a second flush of flowers later on in the year?

I have a lovely, established traditional peony in my garden and I'd love to cut some of the flowers for indoors. However, although it's a shame to leave them outside unnoticed on a wet, damp North East day, I think it would be a bigger shame to cut them if by doing so I had no more peonies this year!

Do they produce a second flush of flowers if cut, or if I took them to put in a vase would that be my lot for this year?

No, peonies do not produce a second crop.

However, if cut at the right stage, peony buds can be stored in the refrigerator, dry, and then cut with a very short stem and floated in a bowl of water to open. I've been able to hold peony buds about 6 weeks with this method.

Reply:Cut them to your hearts content and enjoy them in your home. They do not re-bloom later in the season. Just make sure to leave some blooms on the bush so they do well next year. I love peonies too and wish they would bloom all year. In Wisconsin where I live, they bloom for a couple of weeks in June and then they're done. Usually a rain storm will come along and beat them up so badly that it's better to cut some and bring them in to enjoy them. Also cut blooms that are not already fully open. They will last longer in a vase. Good luck!
