Failure to bloom is usually caused by two things: improper planting and insufficient light. When planting peonies, make sure to plant the eyes (the point at which new growth emerges) no more than two inches deep. Also make sure your plants get plenty of sun. If they're planted in a shady site, they will not flower well--if at all.


Also note that newly planted peonies usually don't flower the first year, which is spent developing a good root system and foliage. By the second spring after planting, you should see your first blooms.

Also..Peonies purchased in the spring more than likely have been held over winter in cold chambers. Planting them in the spring without letting them have the benefit of fall feeder root growth puts the plants under severe stress. Peonies being the tough plants they are will usually recover, however they have suffered a set back and will likely not establish as quickly as those planted in the fall.

Reply:Peonies dislike intensely being moved. These are picky, picky plants. When I moved my peonies it took four year before they bloomed again. Just look at what is called a tree peony...from the time you plant this tree, it will be five years for the first blooms. Just be patient and your blooms will be back. You have not done anything wrong and don't mess with them any further, you will irritate them more. Leave them alone and accept that they need sun, probably needed to be moved but will need to reestablish. Dont do anything more. As long as you have leaves, they have survived the transplant.
Reply:Believe it or not my plants took 5 years to recover after being relocated. First I planted them too deep, took me two years to figure that out so I pulled them up closer to the surface.This is the first year, 6 years later, that I had wonderful blooms. They could have some nutrients added to help them also. I used some flower miracle grow.
