Ant / peony mutualism?

Nearly every peony I have ever examined has ants swarming all over the unopened flower buds. Interestingly, it's not always the same species of ant, but never more than one species per peony plant. It looks to me like they are tending the flower bud, much like ands tend aphids to harvest their nectar. Is anyone familiar with this apparent symbiosis?

Ant / peony mutualism?
Really is this so The ants must be benifiting from the flower buds as the flower must be benefitting from the ants.

I hypothesize that the ants must be receiving some kind of special oil from the plants while the ants help it grow by unwraveling the unopened flower bud

When peonies finish blooming, do I cut them back?

Due to all the rain this year my peonies bloomed beautifully. Now they are all 'spent' and just the bush remains. Can I cut this back to insure a larger bush next year?

When peonies finish blooming, do I cut them back?
You know..... I just asked my husband the same question today. He didn't know either.

I'll see what I can find in one of my garden books and be back to let you know.

Here is what my book says. The book is "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden", by Tracy DiSabato-Aust. On page 194 it reads:

"Pruning: Deadheading peonies will not prolong bloom, but it will greatly enhance the appearance of the plant, snce in most cases, particularly on double forms, the old flowers are so unattractive. ............The foliage on many forms becomes unslightly with the heat of August as plants are starting fo form eyes at that time and don't have much strength for a bush. It is best for the helath of the plant to leave the foliage on the plant as long as possible, even if it's unattractive, so that the foliage can continue to perform photosynthesis and provide food reserves. Peony experts recommend leaving foliage unpruned untl after the first of September in zones 3, 4, and upper zone 5; leave until the end of September in the rest of zone 5. Gardeners in zones 6, 7, and warmer areas should try to leave the foliage until early October. "

-----------------------------------

So now we both know! Thanks for reminding me to look it up.

;-)
Reply:When the foliage of the peony has turned brown in the fall, after the first heavy frost, cut the plants down as near to the ground as possible

all the info you need here
Reply:You can do it now but its still ealry in the year and it might come back up. Wait till fall and mow it down to the ground on that last mow of the season.
Reply:Paeonia officinalis, ssp (or the Peony) is not really a "bush" or shrub; but a shrublike perennial. Meaning that it dies back(goes dormant) to the root in the fall. So prunning it back won't really insure a larger plant next year...That being said I would cut back the flowering stems to tidy up the plant a bit, and to stop the plant from producing seed. Not allowing the plant to produce seed will do more to insure a larger, more robust plant; seed production takes massive amounts of energy. By not allowing the plant to fruit, the plant will produce more flowers next year in an effort to produce seed...
Reply:just cut off the flower part (that's called deadheading), the nutrients from the stems and leaves need to go back into the soil %26amp; die off naturally. If you cut it back now it will try and grow leaves again.

I want to transplant old established tea roses. The roots are enormous and I'm fearful of damaging them.?

Northern California, West Sonoma County. Cold enough for apple, peach, lilac, peony, staghorn sumac and warm enough for many 'sensitive' plants like banans, citrus and palm trees. Need/want to transplant 5 of them.

I want to transplant old established tea roses. The roots are enormous and I'm fearful of damaging them.?
I agree with the first answerer. Cut it all back to about 2-3 feet and then begin the process of transplanting. Try not to be too fearful because roses are tougher than they look. I've moved so many roses and the first I ever moved was about 10 years old. I thought I would lose it, but I had great results. I think it even preferred it's new location because it shot up and out like fireworks the following season. Here is exactly how I do it.

Transplanting a rose

1) wait until evening when temps are cooler.

2) cut the rose back to about 2 or 3 feet.

3) prepare the new home by digging a hole 2ftx2ft and water the hole. Fill the hole with water and let it drain at least twice.

4) save the top 2/3 of soil that you just dug up and set aside. Discard the bottom 1/3.

5) amend the soil you saved with peat, bone meal, and garden compost.

6) in the bottom of the hole add a layer of manure 2-3 inches thick and then layers some of the amended soil on top of the manure. Do NOT set the roots directly on the manure.

7) use a shovel to cut around the rose bush about 24inches from the trunk all the way around.

8) Moving around the rose bush again, reinsert the shovel and pull down on the handle. Doing this all the way around will loosen the soil and begin to separate any long roots. Keep doing this until the rose can be easily removed (Don't worry too much if you break a root because roses are tougher than they look)

9) Remove the rose. At this point it is best to keep as much of the origional soil around the roots as possible.

10) set the rose in hole making sure the soil on the root ball is a little above the level of the new hole. You want the rose to be on a small mound.

11) fill in the hole half way with the ammended soil and water. Once the water has run through then finish filling in the hole with the soil and water throughly.

Now that you have transplanted your rose then make sure you give it water everyday for the next 2 weeks. Be sure you water it at the base and early in the morning because roses don't like to get wet. After the two weeks then you can cut back the watering to once a week. If at any point your rose leaves begin to turn yellow then cut back on the watering.

Good Luck
Reply:Roses are pretty tough plants. Prune them back hard, water them well. Dig the new hole and fill it with water and let it drain. Dig as much as possible of the root ball out, use snippers to cut where you need to. Transplant the roses and water well. You can buy a product that you can water in to help your roses not lose too much moisture. Also, try to do it in the cooler part of the day, late afternoon etc.
Reply:cut the stems, foliage back hard. the less plant matter, the less root system will be needed.

What can you feed to peonies to keep their stems from drooping?

Do you live in the south? Because peonies don't do well down here.

Also, they plants are very poisonous. A tea made from one bloom is said to be strong enough to kill a person.

What can you feed to peonies to keep their stems from drooping?
One shovel full of aged horsemanure per year

I have 1 thats 36 years old
Reply:Feed Miracle Grow like any other flower. Peonies are hardy plants with a good root system. Even after moving the plant, another one grew in the same place as I didn't get all the roots.
Reply:Weak Flower Stems means either deficient soil or excess shade,

Weak stems that do not stand up well when the blossoms are out indicate either a weak stemmed variety, a phosphorus deficiency, or the plant is in too much shade. Fertilize with a balanced, high-phosphorus fertilizer. That is the P of N-P-K. Give the plants bone meal. One handfull scratched into the soil.

If the plant is in shade, move it to a sunny location. If the problem persists, you may have to either stake the flower stems or try another variety.

Apply bone meal or other low nitrogen, complete, slow release fertilizer once a year after flowering (and deadheading.) This is the time of "eye" formation.

Cat ate Peony! URGENT?

My cat ate half of a peony leaf. I know peonies are posionuos to cats but my mom won't do anything about it. I'm scared is my cat going to die!!!! This is urgent! Should I just wait and see if she's fine. HELP!

Cat ate Peony! URGENT?
Call a friendly vet and ask.
Reply:You should call animal control - its illegal for your mom to withhold treatment when the cat is obviously in danger. It should be taken to the vet immediately to ensure that it is safe. You can also log onto the www.aspca.org for poison control contact info.

Do you have a friend or family member that can help you out? Call them - if they can drive you to a shelter or vet - you can explain your situation and I believe they would check out the cat - they won't let it be sick or die. So, reach out to someone you know will help you if your mom is so ignorant and evil that she won't take care of your poor defensless animal.
Reply:why do you have anything that is poisonous to cats in your house?????? get the cat to the vet if you care about your cat. call animal control on your mom if she won't take your cat to the vet
Reply:No. She will die
Reply:In all the toxic plant lists I just looked up it did not say peony on any of them.

I really doubt that a small bit is going to hurt the cat, I had a similar situation on mothers day my kitten was chewing on a calla lily someone brought over and I freaked out. I called the animal poisin control hotline and she found out the a calla lily is not a true lily and although it still was poisionus if my cat was not showing any symptoms then she probably was ok.

Do peonies need to be lifted in the fall?

someone just gave me some tubers should I plant them or wait till spring?

Do peonies need to be lifted in the fall?
Fall is the best time to plant your Peonies. Be sure to plant them about 3-6ft. apart as they tend to get very bushy. Mulch with leaves or evergreen boughs for winter blanket. I use the trimmed branches from our x-mas tree for extra cover on young plantings.

In spring before they get to large, put a peony ring in place for support of the large flowers that become top heavy. Don't get discouraged if they do not bloom the first year. I hope they do for you, but time is of the essence! Full sun to part shady. Very fragrant, and ants love them! Happy Peony planting!
Reply:plant them now and no the do not need to be lifted in the fall have some that have been in same spot for 25 years
Reply:you can plant them in the spring or fall. you can leave them in the ground, you don't have to pull them up every fall. i planted peonies and they bloomed beautifully the 2nd year.
Reply:I don't know about planting them but I do know they do NOT need to be lifted in the fall. We had 9 plants/bushes in our yard when I was a kid. Every fall we mowed them off and every spring they came back up. (20 years that I know of.)
Reply:Peonies do best with fall planting. In zone five and south they are hardy. Places farther north, look for a protected 'micro climate' or mulch them. They die back to the ground every winter and re-emerge in the spring.

they prefer a spot with full sun (except in the south) and they bloom more heavily in sun, but the flowers last longer in part shade. Plant in a large hole, in good well drained, moisture retentive soil. If soil is excessively acid, add one cup lime per plant. Keep fertilizers, bone meal, and lime away from direct contact with the roots. Plant with the eyes or 'growing points' to the top about 1 1/2 inches beneath the soil surface. Mulch the first winter to protect from severe cold.
Reply:DON'T lift those peonies in the fall! They need a cold dormant period to grow and bloom next year. Fall is the best time to plant, divide and transplant peonies. Make sure you do not plant them any deeper than 2 inches or you will not have nice blooms.

How can I stop ants from coming in from fresh cut peonies?

I keep a 5 gallon bucket of water outside. after cutting the flowers I place them bloom side down in the water, leave them for 20 minutes or so.Swirl them around before removing. Shake them gently and you should be good to go.

Ants and peonies go hand in hand, with out the ants...no blooms. Just be patient when cutting, soak and wait. Good luck and God Bless

Love them peonies!...Grandma

How can I stop ants from coming in from fresh cut peonies?
True...

Without the ants, the buds will not bloom. Symbiotic reationship, ya'know. Like love and marriage. LOL
Reply:I usually beat the peonies on the ground or shake the hell out of them before I bring them in the house to get all the ants off.
Reply:Put the flowers in the kitchen sink until all the ants come out..Wash em down the drain
Reply:next to impossible

peonies can't grow without the ants.

it's one of those bazaar nature things

How can I get rid of Peonies? I have four or five that I want to remove.?

I tried to dig out the root systems(biggest roots were hollow, and about 9 inches around!!) and thought that would do it, but a year later, they came back! What gets rid of them???

How can I get rid of Peonies? I have four or five that I want to remove.?
put a sign up saying "FREE PEONIES" you dig...i bet several ppl will stop and volunteer to dig them up...also make sure they fill the holes back in unless you dont mind doing it just to get rid of the peonies....i love these flowers and cant get enough of them...currently have about 20 and looking to add abuot 10 more this fall but of course we have 2 acres and have plenty of room

are you in kentucky? the central part? i would gladly dig them up if you were close to me and i would make sure to get all of the roots
Reply:Please dig them up and give them away.Surely someone could use them.If I was your neighbor I would ask for them.
Reply:Most would love to have them,,,tell the local garden club to come remove them
Reply:Anyone who wants to get rid of peonies should rethink their garden plan!
Reply:When you cut them off, take and drive a nail or drill a whole in the root system. Then pour root killer down in it or something like Round-up in it. That should kill em out.
Reply:cut em'off

How close can peonies be planted?

I want a hedge like, compact effect an d decided to plant my peonies about 12 inches apart. All 22 of them. after all that work\, I am rethinking the whole thing and wonder if they will still bloom. Any suggestions/ideas/comments? Thanks!

How close can peonies be planted?
Mine are about two feet across, so I would think 12 inches might be too close--maybe 18 inches. Hopefully you planted them the correct depth, otherwise they won't bloom. I have had my peonies for over 30 years, only problem is getting lots of aunts on the buds.
Reply:It would help to know if you are talking about the perennial, or shrub varieties? If perennial Hybrids, 12 inches would be minimum amount of space apart as they do once established form rather large clumps. Also you have to know that they do not like having their roots disturbed. They like a sheltered position, in full or slightly filtered position but with soil kept cool and moist.

Mulch and feed with well-rotted manure when leaf growth starts, but definitely at this stage do not disturb roots.

All Peonies are deciduous, and will die back to the ground in autumn.

Not exactly a plant to use as a hedge effect, unless planting with other perennials or annuals as there will be a large gap in your garden when they do die back.

Good luck though
Reply:Sure they'll bloom in the spring. Bad news is they die back to ground level in the winter. 12 inches apart is going to be very compact!

Peony bouquet?

Has anyone used Peony's in their bouquet/bouquets? I recently discovered these flowers and they are beautiful! I was wondering if they are considered a more expensive flower?

Peony bouquet?
Peonies are in season now, so they may cost a bit more out of season. They are so large, however; that you will only need a few. They have a wonderul rosy smell, which you have discovered and you will be reminded of your wedding day each time you smell them. They are delicate, so don't kepp them out of water too long, but your florist can take care of all that.
Reply:They're beautiful, but tend to lose petals. Don't use ones from a garden, as they'll be full of ants. No, they're an average kind of flower.
Reply:Beautiful, they may be seasonal though....
Reply:Peonies are in season here in Ohio until Memorial Day. After that I don't know how expensive they would be. They are a wonderful fragrant flower. Any flower that isn't 'in season' is gonna cost more. Especially if they have to be shipped to your part of the country.

In our back yard, we had 60 of those flowering bushes and every spring I took, whichever teacher I had, beautiful bouquets of peonies.
Reply:Peonies are beautiful. However, be sure to get them from a florist rather than cutting them from someone's yard. Ants are attracted to the smell, and so you may end up with a few unwanted guests! Best wishes!
Reply:ohhh i wanted to use that for my wedding last month but they weren't in season ;(. i've seen them being used as bouquet in a lot of wedding websites but i heard they don't last long so you better check with the florist ;)
Reply:They make extraordinarily beautiful bouquets. They remind me of old English cabbage type roses, so full and lush. They also come in such soft colors that they lend themselves perfectly to most bridal arrangements. They are just now blooming in many parts of the country. Buying in season flowers is of course much cheaper than if you have to have them imported at off-season times.
Reply:I love, love, love Peonies! They smell fantastic and I bet they're fairly cheap too. I'd like to have some in my yard but they're ant heaven cause they smell so sweet.
Reply:They are pretty expensive but they are very pretty and a good size so you won't need alot to make a big bouquet. Hope this helps.
Reply:They are an average, middle range costing flower...but REALLY beautiful I think :)

What's the best way to support peonies?

With all this rain, they just got out of control. There's no way I'll get a cage around them. I have twine, old nylons and I also have some 18" wire fencing that I think I can separate into sections. Which method do you think is best?

What's the best way to support peonies?
You need to use tomato cages on them shortly AFTER then begin to show in the spring. Otherwise, just cut off the flowers and put them in a cheap vase and share with friends and neighbors until next year!
Reply:Go and find or buy some sticks that are around 3-4 feet tall or get some that are longer and cut them down to size. Take a hammer and drive them into the ground around your peonies, about 6 inches should do it, take the twine or nylons (twine will hide better) tie a knot around stick number one, bring it to stick number two, loop it around then go on to stick number three and loop around it, then on to stick four and loop around it as well. Make sure it is tight, but not tight enought to pull the sticks out of the ground. Bring it back to stick number one and tie off the end. Do this about 4-6 inches below were the plant curnetly is as the plant will still grow taller. It will bush out to cover the twine and you will hardly even tell that it is there.
Reply:If you have some old lattice pieces around use them. Either stand it up on end or cut and use fence like and tie them too it. I found this works well with so many flowers. I have my glads planted against it. Ties easy, cut loose after they are finished blooming. I sometimes buy a whole sheet just to have it on hand to cut up for that reason. You know they have the PVC kind that last forever almost. (I use that kind instead of wood, it looks very nice and neat)

nfd♥
Reply:you have to tie them before they even pop u have to take twine and wrap it around them and tie them together. My peno uis by a fence and we tie it around it and tie it to the fence. when they pop they will stazy together

Can I plant peonys along side of a climbing roses?

I planted some peony last Oct I know it's still early but it dosen't look like it's growing at all I was wondering can I plant roses by them? I have some climbing rose and I planted the peonys by a gate...and before you ask (lol) did I plant the eyes up I tryed to they were sort of all over the place so it was hard to tell up from down but I planted with the most up.

Can I plant peonys along side of a climbing roses?
Yes, no problems

I planted Peonies near to a climbing rose(southern end of garden) rest of garden was a mixture of peonies %26amp; roses.

The garden is north facing(our sunniest aspect)

Every year beautiful peonies followed by the roses

This garden has been producing for 12 years so far
Reply:I wouldn't, the roses would choke out the Peonies. Important to remember that Peonies like one sunny place in your yard. They don't like to be transplanted and moved around a lot.
Reply:It would be ok if their respective root and above ground growing areas are sufficient for both your roses and peonies. Both of these plants are surface rooting, which means that they will face some competition from each other for water and nutrients. I'd give them a good minimum 3' between them, as Peonies will spread to cover a good wide area over time.

Secondly, whilst roses can grow upwards more than laterally, there is competition for light by these plants. Ensure that the roses don't potentially shade the sun loving peonies too much, otherwise its growth will be restricted.

With regards to your Peonies growth just now, I'm not sure where you live, but there is still good time for your plant to produce its shoots. Tree Peonies are wonderful too, though I assume that you have planted the more typical herbaceous type, that dies completely back below ground level each year.

Consider a tree Peony - their stunning flowers can easily be over 12'' across, but they need more space than the herbaceous type. Just recommend these, as my garden is greatly enhanced when they are in flower, and everyone admires their stunning flowers. https://www.dutchbulbs.com/store/peonies...

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
Reply:no.
Reply:y not?
Reply:peony prefers to live alone...... it's not a plant to be mixed in a bed,but rather given it's own space..... I'd move them now, as the length of time they've been in the ground suggests they'll not bloom this year..... so no matter about the move time....

eyes up is good... shallow depth is most important.... no more than an inch or at the most, two inches of soil over them... and no mulch..... deeper or covered in mulch or old leaves, they'll refuse to bloom, too.... so be sure to clean off their bed before winter and not let leaves and such collect there....

The 2 peonies at home looks has some brown spots on its leaves!!?

I am a newbie to peonies and I have planted 2 in my front yard Nov last year. Since spring this year, my peonies leaves turned yellow, and has some brown spots on it, looks like some kind of rust. Other plants nearby it are normal.

Are they lacking water? nutritions? Fungi problem?

Does anyone know if there is a way to save it? Thanks!!

-mw

The 2 peonies at home looks has some brown spots on its leaves!!?
MW- it would help to know where you live, or at least which USDA hardiness zone you're in, it helps us to answer your question.

That being said, many Peony's are suceptible to bacterial or fungal leaf spots. They appear as small black spots, sometimes ringed with yellow, or orange. The spots become so prolific, that they fill the spaces between, and can become large blotches.

If this is the problem, it tells me two things; too much water on the foliage. When you do water, keep the water off of the leaves when possible. The other, not enough air circulation. Try to leave some space for air movement. New plants sometimes come with the problem, as they are grown in large fields of similar plants, and the problem passes on from plant to plant.

This time of year, I wouldn't really do much to treat the problem. Be sure to remove the leaves when they die back, and throw them away or burn them. Do not ever compost diseased leaves, as this disease may winter over in the compost pile. If you are worried for next year, apply a general purpose fungicide to the plant, when the growth is about 75% mature, this will help prevent infection. Use an organic fertilizer as well. If you see spots develop, immediately resume the use of the fungicide. Always follow the directions on label of all of your garden chemicals.

If you're still not sure of the diagnosis, bring a fresh sample to your local independent garden center, they may have an expert on staff who can diagnose the problem.

I hope that this helps

Good luck-
Reply:I don't know where you live, but I'm on the mid-Atlantic seaboard of the U.S. This time of year is when the Peonies are dying back. Their foliage often starts to yellow up and develop spots. At the beginning of October is when you want to cut them back to the ground, anyway. Just dispose of the leaves and stems. I mark where the Peonies are planted once I've cut them back so I won't disturb their new shoots in the spring. A stake or low fencing works nicely. Whatever will work as a reminder for you that your Peonies are there so you don't dig them up or harm them in the spring.

here's Bowl of Beauty..

good call by previous poster!
Reply:It's an herbaceous peony, but what cultivar is hard to know. The flower itself would be considered an "anemone bomb" because of the shape of the outer large petals and the inner ones that are a big poof.

It looks kinda like 'Bowl of Beauty', which is a really popular one. Did you buy it recently? If so, from where?

To keep them from flopping over you can go to Walmart, or any garden shop, and buy peony hoops. They have 3 legs that go into the ground and a hoop that can be opened and closed to get around the peonies, they also help hold them up off the ground. The hoops are $1.79 to $3 at Walmart. You can also try supporting them with bamboo poles posted long the line of peonies and tying twine as a support.

it a cultivated hybrid Peony, in lavender or pink
Reply:My neighbors put tomato cages over the plants when they are about 6 in tall, then the plants don't fall over. Those peonies are pretty.

What is your experience with double knockout roses?

I want to plant some rose bushes along a fence in my backyard--I already have some peony bushes that are flourishing.. I live in Northern Illinois and this spot receives full sun all day and is well drained. I am considering planting the knockout roses or the newer double knockouts. I want something that will bloom profusely but does not require a lot of care? Which of these is best? Or do you have other suggestions? Appreciate the help!!

What is your experience with double knockout roses?
I love them. They are easy to care for, self-cleaning and disease resitant, they fill many of the same rolls as a shrubs. I think you are making a good choice by going with the knockout roses.
Reply:The knockouts should do great there as they are pretty low maintenance and are disease resistant.
Reply:yes, they are disease resistant and the double blooms are awesome, but the only setback with knockouts is they have multiple blooms on a single stem which makes deadheading tedious. deadheading is required to maintain blooms throughout the season and if you dont mind doing it about once a week, youll have great results. it takes about twice as long to deadhead knockouts (shrub roses) as others like grandiflora or hybrid tea.

says....

" Members of this genus are rarely if ever troubled by browsing deer or rabbits[233]. A very greedy plant inhibiting the growth of nearby plants, especially legumes[54]. The plant does not really need much pruning apart from removing dead or diseased stems. It is, however, very tolerant of pruning and can be cut right back to ground level if it requires rejuvenation[200]. Strongly resents root disturbance, taking some time to recover after being divided[1]. Peony species are usually self-fertile, though they will also hybridise with other species if these flower nearby at the same time[250]. Plants take 4 - 5 years to flower from seed[200]. They generally breed true from seed[1]. Cultivated in China as a medicinal plant[214]."

Reply:But this refers to SHRUB peonies, not tree peonies.

Good luck, anyway. Report It

Reply:It is customary to cut them back (herbacous peonies) after foliage is dead or faded in the autumn, to about 2-3 inches high. It should come back okay in the springtime. Tree peonies sould NEVER be cut back. They will not survive it.

You may need to ask him to replace them for you. I am sorry that this happened, but if he ruined your plant, you could ask him to get your another one by all rights.
Reply:Ongoing Care of Peony Plants

Use garden fertilisers such as blood and bone, potato fertiliser or nitrophoska blue

Manure can be used if well rotted; do not put over the crown of the plant

Autumn is a good time to apply fertiliser, spring can also be used

Cut off at ground level in autumn and burn tops

Keep weed free to reduce competition and allow good air movement for healthy plants

Some taller plants with double flowers may need support – use wire hoops. Put in the ground after the buds come through. The shoots will grow through them and are virtually invisible once the leaves spread out

The peony will grow better with regular watering especially up until flowering

Peony Planting?

My mom just bought me four peonies (they look like big bulbs, not sure?). I live in Greenville, SC and we are having warm weather with lots of rain. Can I still plant these? Will they grow this year? Any replies would be great. Also she bought me a pack of "hardy" gladiolas that do not need to be dug up each year. Can I plant those as well?

Peony Planting?
Strangely, people do buy them in the spring and then plant them in the fall, but they might bloom. I would plant them - the little eye buds should be just barely under the surface. They should at least grow this year and they may flower.

Hardy glads should do OK - they do like some cold, so do not plant them deeper than with their tops a few inches under the soil. They glads may be a little "iffy" - some bulbs just like it a little cooler so they are uncertain in warmer climates. Any of these may take a year or so to really produce well - they tend to sell the bulbs younger and younger each year. If these are nice fat bulbs, you are more likely to get some production this year. If they seem a little thin and lean, they may take a year or two to fully mature. But plant them all - the glad will tolerate some light shade quite well in your climate - peonies like sun, but can take a little light shade as well.

Peonies smell like rose-scent does. Glads are nice big spikes you can cut and bring in or leave to make a nice 24" to 30" tall show. Enjoy.
Reply:Ideally, you would have planted them in the fall. You should plant them as soon as possible. If you don't get them in the ground, it's not likely they would last a whole season and still be alive. They will grow this year, the same as an established plant. They die back every year and re-emerge in the spring. The same is pretty much true for the glads.

Make sure you plant the bulbs upright-- not upside down. If you're not sure which side the roots will be on (the down-side) then check with a garden specialist at a nursery. (And don't plant the peonies too close together-- they get pretty big.)
Reply:Peonies have a reputation for being hard to transplant. To ensure survival, dig a hole twice the size you think sufficient, loosen the soil with compost or peat moss, toss with starter fertilizer and water vigorously to get them going and your grandkids will be enjoying those peonies.

How do I start peonies from seed? and what time of year?

You should plant them now, but as for starting for seeds, I would not. I would search out an actual plant or get a root from one of your neighbors. It will take approx 1-3 years to bloom.

How do I start peonies from seed? and what time of year?
All peonies can be raised from seeds. However not all varieties come true. Sow during September in pots filled with special soil for seedlings.Keep in a cold frame over winter. When the plants are large enough the following May set out in a nursery bed where they stay for three or four years before planting them in permanent locations between September and March.Plants can also be divided and replanted in September.Cut crowns with sharp knife. Care must be taken that each piece has roots and dormant buds.
Reply:Peonies don't have seeds! They spread by roots, so divide them carefully at this time of year and ONLY this time of year. Plant them shallow, or they won't grow.
Reply:Good luck with seeds. I've never heard of anyone doing it. Plant the tubors now or keep dry and cool and plant in spring. Be careful not to plant too deep or they will NOT bloom. They like to be shallow and will bloom if they are planted that way. Feed with bone meal every other year and plan on staking because the blooms are so big and heavy when they have bone meal that they can't stay upright.

Is it really good this feed and weed chemical for lawn ? Would it disturb my peonies and other flowering?

plants near the grass ? I hand pulled the weeds on my lawn and it leaves hole in the grass.

Is it really good this feed and weed chemical for lawn ? Would it disturb my peonies and other flowering?
The label on the fertilizer bag should tell you what the weed killer will and will not harm. Probably most flowers, being broad-leafed, will be harmed.

Although I've used weed 'n feed fertilizer on my lawn, I really prefer to spray weed killer on the lawn using my garden hose. It comes in a small bottle with concentrate inside, you screw it onto your hose, and walk around spraying the yard lightly. One bottle covers typically about 5000 sq. ft. and costs about $ 10. It takes about 10 minutes to spray one bottle.
Reply:i would not use a weed "preventor" this will stop your peonies from regerminating. just make sure your weed and feed does not say"weed prevention or pre-emergence on the lable".

What are some bras that are under $30 and can be thrown in the washing machine?

I have 5 Victoria's Secret Bras and everytime I wash them they F up. I went to Rainbow and they told me if it didn't fit, then I couldn't return it. I don't want ugly granny bras and I am not paying more that $30 for ONE bra. I used to work at Victoria's Secret. Their bras are not measured correctly, and the materials are cheap, (ever notice all of their scents in beauty all have peony?) Anyway, please I need help!

What are some bras that are under $30 and can be thrown in the washing machine?
Sports bras %26amp; hanes bras or even fruit of the loom. There the best way to go.

Here is an everyday bra

in the bra section u can find 5-10 dollar bras...great quality

look for tahari brand...that one is the best

olga is another good brand....u can wash these bras just never put them in the dryer.
Reply:Im from Canada and here we havea store called La Senza you can get 2 bras for $36 sometimes even cheaper. They have really good quality bras, its kinda like Canadas version of VS. I put mine in th dryer and they are fine. I think you can order online too if you aren't from here. i imagine the website would be www.lasenza.com or .ca
Reply:Bras from Walmart can be thrown in the washing machine, and they can be cute too. Just make sure they're over $8 if you want a slightly better quality.

Or you could easily go to a department store.
Reply:My favorite place to buy bras is H%26amp;M.

Their underwear is stylish, very comfortable and doesn't get screwed up in the washer.

I have problems fitting into any other bras, so my underwear is almost exclusively from there.

And EVERYTHING I own has to survive the washer.

I put my bras in the washer and then let them air dry. But they survive even the dryer perfectly.

And they go for under $20 - can't beat that! ;)
Reply:just tie two coconuts together with a string.....! you'll be golden.and it will cost you less than 30 dollars
Reply:E-Bay offers Cooby, and I love them.
Reply:bon ton,%26amp; jc pennies have good bras around 15 dollars and up and they are good bras that hold up. all my bras VSecret, bon ton jc pennies, even walmart which are as low as 8 dollars i always wash them in the handwash cycle with woollite and i air dry them flat . i wash them along with my other delicates like panties, slips, silk nighties. ect. and they are all still in very great shape and i dont wash my bras after every single wear...i wear them two times before i wash them.
Reply:I wash my bras and dry them. I put them in a pillow case and tie the end, that way they don't get tangled or twisted up like the VS bras always do.
Reply:My bras are all VS and I dont have a problem washing them. I guess it depends what fit your are buying... Underwire, push-up, etc that need to keep form. But I have gone to Mandees, believe it or not and bought $12 bras that have outlasted VS... Pretty weird, as I NEVER shop for anything else at Mandees...
Reply:you can put any bra in the washing machine.

just don't put them in the dryer, let them air dry
Reply:My husband bought me 7 bras from Victoria's Secret for Christmas..They are the WORST BRAS I HAVE EVER WORN. The underwear were great, but the bras are so uncomfortable. If you want comfort, low price and washable. Gillian O'Malley bras at target, I like the minimizer bras but they are kind of ugly. They do have a lot of cute designs and they are very reasonably priced! good luck.
Reply:WALMART HAS A FRUIT OF THE LOOM LINE WITH SEVEN DIFFERENT FIT BACK AND OR FRONT CLOSURE VERY COMFORTABLE IN YOUTH DESIGNS AS WELL AS SEXY ONES ALL UNDER TEN BUX AND THEY WASH WELL
Reply:Sweetie I wash all the wife's bras in the washing machine and she doesn't wear granny bras either...It's the way you're washing drying them that f*.* them up. Delicate cycle for both washer and dryer...no more then 30 mins in dryer. Also so far as brands go Playtex, etc from stores like Penny's and Sears are good ones. None ever fit right I saw a special on TV with my wife about that not too long ago...Do the best you can. I also suggest getting a small bag to compact them when you go to put them in the dryer it'll keep them from getting frayed. PEACE!
Reply:Target has really cheap bras. Also, Frederick's Hollywood is a lingerie store that has nice bras too. Any department store like Macy's, Foley's, or Dillard's has cheap, quality bras there.
Reply:fredricks of hollywood are great bras and great prices to i put mine the wash and they come out just fine. also when washing dont stuff in too many clothes .
Reply:I get mine at Wal*mart they are cheap u can wash um and not all r granny looking!!!

Have a GREAT day
Reply:I have bras from Candies (I get them at Kohls) They are not too pricey, less than $20 usually. and I throw them in the washing machine and then let them hang dry. Works for me
Reply:try lasenza they have cheap ones. just wash all bras on gentle or handwash in tub and hang to dry
Reply:I have bras from places like Target that were much less than $30 and they arent granny bras at all. most are push up. I usually just suggest shopping the previous seasons styles on the clearance racks at all the department stores. I do this every season and I leave with about 5-6 new bras. If I wasn't a D I'd probably leave with more considering they typically have lots of smaller sizes.
Reply:Target has cute ones for around $15. I've been getting mine there for a few years now.

Frederick's of Hollywood I'm not sure about their prices but I don't think they're that expensive..
Reply:Try limited too
Reply:visit this website...barenecessities.com or just click playtex on google....very cheap and nice..kinda sexy too for affordable $$

How to make shampoo have a different scent?

Due to some people's allergies at work, we are not allowed to wear perfume or body spray, however, scented shampoo does not affect the people in question. Is there any type of bottled oil or liquid I can add to my shampoo to give it a bit of lavender, peony, etc, scent?

How to make shampoo have a different scent?
You can go to just about any herblal store and get scented oil and mix it in your shampoo and or conditioner. Some places have it to where you can actually mix and make your own bathroom products - I think its pretty cool
Reply:Why not buy a scented shampoo at your beauty shop where you get your hair done? You would get a product that smells good and is good for your hair type.
Reply:Essential oil. Just a drop or two will do the trick.
Reply:I would'nt mix anything , by a shampoo with a scent you like!
Reply:at your buety place

they sell shampoo that

makes your hair smell like mint

its really nice
Reply:I wouldn't add anything to your shampoo. It's already scented. Then you will be combining scents and it could end up not mixing well. If you do decide to try mixing then only do a small amount at a time. Also rememer how many scents you already wear everyday. Shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, laundry detergent, fabric softner, etc.
Reply:well the scent that you are adding could effect there allergies,

find out from the allergy sufferers if that would be OK!
Reply:you need to buy it and if not that go to like a bath and body works and theyll make your own sent for YOU!

How do I get peonies to bloom? I have healthy leaves but few flowers.?

I moved the plant from shade to more sun two years ago.

How do I get peonies to bloom? I have healthy leaves but few flowers.?
Failure to bloom is usually caused by two things: improper planting and insufficient light. When planting peonies, make sure to plant the eyes (the point at which new growth emerges) no more than two inches deep. Also make sure your plants get plenty of sun. If they're planted in a shady site, they will not flower well--if at all.

Also note that newly planted peonies usually don't flower the first year, which is spent developing a good root system and foliage. By the second spring after planting, you should see your first blooms.

http://www.dutchgardens.com/Frequently-A...

Also..Peonies purchased in the spring more than likely have been held over winter in cold chambers. Planting them in the spring without letting them have the benefit of fall feeder root growth puts the plants under severe stress. Peonies being the tough plants they are will usually recover, however they have suffered a set back and will likely not establish as quickly as those planted in the fall.

http://www.paeonia.com/html/peonies/grow...

Good luck! Hope this was helpful.
Reply:Peonies dislike intensely being moved. These are picky, picky plants. When I moved my peonies it took four year before they bloomed again. Just look at what is called a tree peony...from the time you plant this tree, it will be five years for the first blooms. Just be patient and your blooms will be back. You have not done anything wrong and don't mess with them any further, you will irritate them more. Leave them alone and accept that they need sun, probably needed to be moved but will need to reestablish. Dont do anything more. As long as you have leaves, they have survived the transplant.
Reply:Believe it or not my plants took 5 years to recover after being relocated. First I planted them too deep, took me two years to figure that out so I pulled them up closer to the surface. This is the first year, 6 years later, that I had wonderful blooms. They could have some nutrients added to help them also. I used some flower miracle grow.

I live in S. California and want to know when peonies are in season?

I really like peonies and would like to use them as part of my floral wedding arrangements. However I know that off season, flowers are pricier and I'm trying to estimate my budget.

I live in S. California and want to know when peonies are in season?
The California Peony (Paeonia californica) produces maroon 2" flowers in Jan.-Mar. It's native from Monterey to San Diego http://www.laspilitas.com/plants/456.htm

Most of the herbaceous Peonies need a long cold dormancy and will either do poorly or perish in a climate as warm as Oceanside in southern California. http://www.peonies.org/faq0.html

Here's a list of California Native Plants:

http://www.californiagardens.com/Lists/n...

California Peony (Paeonia californica) is just one of the natives. Mixing them in with other flowers is a good idea. Most florist get their flowers (even flowers that are grown in their own state) from other states %26amp; even from other countries with cheap labor anyway. Sometimes it's cheaper for them because they contract for huge volumes at big discounts.

Good luck %26amp; congratulations! Hope this helped.
Reply:You're welcome! I was surprised to learn that California has a native Peony. I'm glad I could help. Congratulations! Report It

Reply:I can't grow poenies here in FL, but I used to grow them in Ohio and there they grew well during the summer months, for sure June thru August.
Reply:Peony require a winter chill you won't get in SCal, even a tree peony. They bloom in late spring, so you might find them south of the equator in the fall. RScott

How do you go about growing lavender plants?

I really like the smell of lavender, and would like to have some lavender plants outside my windows. I know that they are parennial plants, but do you start them from seeds? Are lavender plants like peony in that you have to buy the plant of-shoot of a mature plant? What is the best way to grow lavender plants?

How do you go about growing lavender plants?
Your local nursery will have at least 1 variety of Lavender. Or you can grow your own from seed, it's your choice. Some tips for growing it.....they do not like wet feet! Do not thirst them to death....but let the soil dry between waterings. Also they do not like a lot of fertilizer so use it very sparingly. Trim the faded blooms to encourage new blooms and if it gets too large do not be afraid to cut it back hard. It will regrow and re-bloom all over again! Lavender is a great plant, and I love the smell too! Have fun and good luck!
Reply:You're welcome! Thank YOU for choosing my answer! Enjoy your Lavender! Report It

Reply:They're easiest to buy in small pots in the herb section of a nursery; but you can also get them in 1 gallon pots. There are many beautiful varieties, heights and colors--all of which have a very pleasant scent. I just set them out in my garden (in a sunny spot).
Reply:I grow lavender and I just bought the plants already started at the nursery and set them out like any other. They took off really well. I have seperated them a couple of times. It shouldn't be any problem to find them at the nursery and home and garden centers.
Reply:If you can't find any plants already started Burpee has a seeds in variety called 'Lavender Lady' that states it blooms the first year. Grows to about 18". I started these myself in two small flats. You get a ton of seeds in the package and it costs about $1.07. Hope something from this helps

What are some plants to plant with a dwarf japanese maple?

I have this flower bed in front of my house I want to turn into like a rock garden with a japanese maple, but not too sure what to get. I am thinking maybe some lilies and irises, and maybe a peony. Any suggestions?

What are some plants to plant with a dwarf japanese maple?
When you plant your jap maple,,,,,be sure it's protected from wind and harsh sun....also, when planting any new tree,,,be careful planting flowers under it.....a trees water needs are very different from perennials and annuals water needs. Endless summer hydrangeas look beautiful with jap maples...also you could try stella de oro day lilies....assuming you will be planting a red jap maple.....try to pick flowers that will contrast the red well. There is a low growing perennial called Silver mound....it contrasts well with the red of the jap maples. Your options are abound....have fun choosing! And like I mentioned....be careful of your watering...jap maples are finicky,,,,,but once they get established are well worth the extra care.
Reply:A a dwarf Maple is a beautiful ornamental. I would not put anything around it to distract from it's beauty.

Mondo grass - especially the black mondo grass - is the perfect compliment to dwarf maples. It is low growing delicate, and evergreen. It will play up the sculpted appearance of the maple in every season..and the bed will never have that 'dead' look in winter.

Be sure to have a low bench or other seating area, so you can enjoy your tree.

Hope this helps! :)
Reply:We planted Siberian Iris around ours. It is about 2 1/2 ft tall, so if you have a small maple, be careful. The slender iris leaves are green all summer and add a vertical element to the wider habit of the maple.
Reply:Foxgloves in the back for height along with hostas for greenery. mix some New Zealand Impatiens in and around them for more greenery and some flowers. in front of these you could add lower level plants such as regular Ipatiens and Bleeding Hearts as well as Calla Lilies. I amost forgot to have you mix in some maiden hair ferns in the middle and near the background. In the far back you might want to experiment with some taller ferns depending on the height of your Maple tree.

I hope this helps. Your local garden center can also help you with plants that will do well in your particular gardening zone.

Have fun (this is the most important ingredient in successful gardening).
Reply:a special maple needs to basically stand alone.... get too much planted around it and it might as well be a weed..... Japanese forest grass is nice.... again, as was mentioned, is it shade or sun and will your choice of tree like it in the shade or sun?... hosta is great for shady spots and goes well with both the tree and the forest grass in the shady spot.... fill in the bed with boulders or a nice little bed of fine gravel and a special rock .... plant a few small azaleas for color in spring and maybe a hydrangea..... these are all complements to the tree and found in a Japanese garden...that's shaded....

can't help you with a sunny one, cuz most of the maples I know that are special like the shade more than sun..... be sure to research before you plant one!!...here's a great site for maples...

Can my peonies survive the winter, in pots, in the garage?

I will e moving in Jan, and can't bear to leave my peonies behind. So I dug them up, and put them in pots in the garage. Also, when would be a good time to replant them?

Can my peonies survive the winter, in pots, in the garage?
I dont see why not? they lay pretty close to the top of the ground, root wise that is.Freeze tables are usually 30 in plus according to where yu live. maybe dress them with some peat too and make sure no exposure to wind and chill factor? about first of march put them back out in a sheltered area? try to keep the dirt and peat they are in close to the roots to not disturb small runners.
Reply:they will probably survive but as soon as spring comes at your new place be sure to put them in the ground, garage is good for now.

Can I transplant peonies in the spring?

I am on the border of zone 4 %26amp; 5, and fall into each differently depending on the map.

Can I transplant peonies in the spring?
Peonies can be left undisturbed for many years. Sometimes, however, it becomes necessary to move established plants. Peonies shaded by large trees or shrubs bloom poorly and should be moved to a sunny site. Large, old plants may become overcrowded and flower poorly. Large, old plants should be dug, divided, and transplanted to improve performance. The best time to move and divide peonies is September.

Moving established plants is a simple procedure. Cut the peony stems near ground level in September. Then carefully dig around and under each plant. Try to retain as much of the root system as possible. Promptly plant the peony in a sunny, well-drained site.

Division of large peony clumps requires a few additional steps. After digging up the plant, gently shake the clump to remove loose soil from the root system. Divide the clump into sections, making sure each division has at least 3 to 5 eyes (buds) and a good portion of the root system.

Peonies grow best in full sun and well-drained soils. Dig a hole large enough for the entire root system. Place the peony plant in the hole so the eyes are 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface. (Peonies planted deeper than 2 inches often fail to bloom satisfactorily.) Fill the hole with soil, firming the soil as you backfill, then water thoroughly. Space plants about 3 to 4 feet apart. Apply a 2 to 4 inch layer of mulch in late fall. Straw is an excellent mulch. Mulching will prevent repeated freezing and thawing of the soil that could damage the plants. Remove the mulch in early spring before growth begins. Transplanted peonies will not bloom well the first spring. They should be back to full flower production by the third or fourth year.
Reply:since the peonies are really a spring bloomer I would divide after they bloom or in the fall. I mean you can probably divide them in the spring if you don't want to see them bloom this year. But as a basic rule of thumb plants that bloom in the spring divide in the fall and plants that bloom in the fall divide in the spring.
Reply:Yes you can they are very hardy , lift the entire tubor up or sperate them or just remove a section lift a section ,they will grow rapidly.
Reply:You can do,but it would have been best to do it october time.Make sure you dig it up with plenty of soil attached if doing so now.

How do I grow Peonies from seed?

I have a beautiful Peonie bush that I would love to be able to gather seed from and grow another. I am just not sure how to do it. Do the seeds need to dry? Are the pods left after the flowers die actually seeds? I know it may be easier to divide the plant but I am reluctant to do so because I don't want to lose this plant. The flowers are the size of a super-sized grapefruit and the color of RED VELVET! Thanks for any help!

How do I grow Peonies from seed?
Peony seeds are double dormant and require cold stratification. Some peonies produce red %26amp; black seeds in the same seed pod. Discard the red seeds and use only the black seeds as these are the only fertile seeds. Place the seeds in a pot this fall %26amp; leave outdoors to chill the seeds. Or place the seeds in a zip-lock bag with some sand and just slightly moisten the sand. Put the bag of seeds in your refrigerator for at least 90 days, then sow.

During the first summer's growth, the seeds will only develop roots. A second period of cold (another winter) is required before vegetative growth will appear in the second season. So don't expect to see the plant the first year after sowing seeds.

The alternative is to sow the seeds in a pot with bottom heat at 65 - 75 degrees F for 3 months. Then refrigerate the pots at 41 degrees F for another 3 months. Now the plant should be ready to generate new shoots. Remember that peonies like to be transplanted in fall, so grow them in the pots until its time to transplant.
Reply:growing peonies from seed is next to impossible. your best bet is to divide ...take 1/3 of the root system, you won't harm your existing plant, down side.... if you do it this way it will take a year or two for your new plant to flower. I have peonies in my yard that were originally from my great grandmothers stock....the root systems are well over 90 years old! if you divide carefully, everything should be fine. we always divided in the early spring or fall it depends on where you live.

How do I save my peonies from botrytis?

Im pretty sure this is what they have. They are wilting and cannot flower. I dont see any fungus on them, but the tips of the leaves have started to yellow... what, if anything, can I do to save them so they will come back, if not this season then next? Thanks!

How do I save my peonies from botrytis?
The most frequently occurring pests are botrytis blight and leaf blotch, both fungal diseases. Especially prevalent during wet springs, botrytis affects leaves, stems and flowers. Spots appear on leaves, stems soften and decay and flowers either rot or buds blacken and fail to open. Prompt removal of infected material and a thorough fall cleanup are essential for control.

Leaf blotch develops during warm, moist weather. Glossy, dark purple spots form on the upper surfaces of leaves. Again, removal of infected leaves and good fall cleanup are necessary for control. Avoid overhead irrigation.

The primary control of future botrytis infections is cultural. Deadhead your spent %26amp; infected blooms. Clean up any debris around your peonies. Cut your peonies down to 2-3" in fall. Burn all the plant debris or discard in the trash. Do not overheat water your peonies. Water at the base of your plants. Botrytis likes humidity. Prune the shrubs around your peonies to improve air flow. Mulch your peonies. The link I have provided gives some good details on identifing Botrytis on flower petals versus thrips or old age.

Peony question?

Forgive what is a fantastically stupid question. Peonies - I know there are tree peonies and I'm assuming there are other types too. What I need to know is how they reproduce. Seeds, bulbs, tubers, what? Any explicitly helpful links would be extremely well-received.

Wouldn't normally take so lazy a way out of my own research needs, but the web generally seems a little reluctant to give up its peony secrets...:o)

Thanks folks.

Peony question?
The most common are these two kinds of peonies, Tree peonies (Paeonia suffruticosa) and Herbaceous peonies syn. Chinese peonies (Paeonia lactiflora). Tree peonies are perennial shrubs and herbaceous peonies are perennial herbs.

In nature, tree peonies would propagate themselves by seeds and herbaceous peonies by seeds and spreading their clumps. Herbeceous peonies produce "eyes" on their roots. When the plant would be divided, those eyes are separated and will produce a new plant. If left alone, the clump will spread.

Reply:Peonies are fun because they are soooo durable and versatile! You will find that your shrub will grow via tubers each year. When you have a mature plant you can dig it up in the fall and separate the tubers into small pieces and replant. Remember not to plant too deep. Your mother plant will appreciate the effort as they like to be separated every few years. You will quickly have a full, lovely peony bed!

Visit with your friends and neighbors. It is fun to divide and exchange for variety.

Have fun.
Reply:Go to the peony forum on gardenweb.com they can help you alot
Reply:All previous answers are good, just remember when dividing the Peony to have at least two eyes on each tuber

The eyes are where you can see the growth on the tuber

I plant Clematis in between mine so that after the Peony finishes flowering the Clematis will take over and you will have a another showing of flowers

You will get more flowers if planted in full sun

Have fun
Reply:Peonies are members of the ranunculae or buttercup family. they come in two basic forms woody and and herbaceous. They are incredibly long lived, I know of some plants that are 50 plus years old.The best way to get a start is to divide a root in the fall for the herbaceous types, tree types are best bought at a nursery(their blooms can be huge). The plants produce seeds which can be a challenge to the most seasoned of gardeners to achieve germination. Other members of the clan include anemones, columbine, buttercups, hellebores, delphiniums ...it's a rich tableau.

To germinate a peony seed nick the seed coat and pre-chill (Packed in moist sawdust or sphagnum moss in a zip-lock bag )for 6 weeks or so.There are auxins out there which can increase germination, gibberillic acid is probably the best.I personally have had luck with a 1% solution of hydrogen peroxide(dilute regular 3% solution 2 to 1)This is not strong enough to harm anything, but it puts one available oxygen atom in there for every hundred water molecules.Dont get in a hurry, and dont throw the seeds away for maybe two years.Good luck
Reply:As far as I understand it, all peonies are basically shrubs, but the breed as well as your location will dictate how large they get. You can grow them from tubers, or crowns, which sort of look like ginger or you can buy mini plants all over in thre springtime. Any garden center, even home depot should have them now. They're really gorgeous flowers and when they're done blooming the foliage is still pretty.

Peony flowers and ants. What is the relationship?

I have a full stand of peony Flowers, but they have ants on them. Someone told me that the bud requires some action from the Ants in order to bloom. I think they are just after the sweet nectar.

Who has the answer?

Peony flowers and ants. What is the relationship?
Peonies don't need ants to bloom, but the ants don't really hurt the flowers either. The ants are after the nectar, but even if the ants aren't there the peonies will bloom fine.

At worse the ants are unsightly on the flowers, at best they might remove enough of the sticky nectar to aid the flowers minimally.
Reply:The ants are attracted to the sweet substance released on the flowers of the plant. What is nice about having Peonies is they also help keep ants from wanting to enter your house, because the plants attract them so much they spend their time on the plants. I haven't tried it, but they say that if you plant the Peony by the entrances to your house the ants will definitely stay outdoors with the plants.
Reply:The ants help the Peony to bloom, just make sure when you cut them to take in the house you get rid of any ants.
Reply:They do require the ants for the bloom to open. I have several Peony bushes.
Reply:I've been told the ants crawl between the petals and help them unfurl.

Does anyone know what the theme is of the novel The Jade Peony???

" 'The Jade Peony' explores themes traditionally associated with novels about the immigrant experience: the promise and treachery to be found outside the matrix of the family, the burden of old ways, the necessity of learning new ones."

What is the best way to store peonies after being dug up?

We have a row of peonies across the front of our house. In a few days, we will be digging a 6 foot trench by the house and need to remove the peonies for about 3 or 4 days. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to keep these plants alive before being replanted? We have burlap sacks but would appreciate any advice given. Thank you : )

What is the best way to store peonies after being dug up?
The link below has several answers to a very similar question (need to move peonies and can't wait until fall). Read it for more details, but in summary:

Water thoroughly first. Dig a REALLY big ball around the roots of the peonies. Wrap them in burlap or put them in large plastic pots and keep them wet. Protect them from the sun. When you replant them, water them thoroughly and consistently for the first week or so. Water in the morning so they can dry off before nightfall, and try not to get water on the leaves. Some suggested dividing the root balls at this time, with the idea that it would trigger the growing stage.

If they survive, it's unlikely that they'll bloom for a season or two, so don't get discouraged.
Reply:The best way to transport peonies from one location to another is to dig them up in the autumn and divide the crown. The divisions can them be shipped to your new home and planted. Unfortunately this is not always possible, we cannot always plan when we are going to move house.

It is possible to dig peonies up at any time of the year but the chances of success are slim if this is done during the period when they are actively growing. The worst time of the year to move them is during the months of May and August. If the plants have to be moved at this time try to keep as much of the root ball together as possible, even if this means taking a lot of soil with you. Water the plants regularly after replanting and water every day if the weather is particularly hot.

The best way to move mature plants is to plan your move several months in advance. Peonies grow remarkably well in rectangular plastic baskets, which are widely used in wholesale horticulture. The best ones are made out of black plastic and measure approximately 40 x 60 x 25cm. Both the sides and base are ventilated and they allow the peony to develop a normal root system. These baskets may not be available for sale, but if you ask your local garden centre they may have some that they are willing to sell to you. Herbaceous peonies do not like being grown in pots, but if you have no choice use a loam based compost and the largest pot that you can find. Keep containerised peonies well watered and plant in the autumn when you have moved to your new home. All containerised peonies will need regular watering during the summer.

Further information about growing peonies can be found in 'The Gardener's Guide to Growing Peonies', published Timber Press in the USA.

Best wishes!

Who is the author of the story "the jade peony"?

Wayson Choy's The Jade Peony is about growing up in Vancouver's early Chinatown. The book, which began as a much anthologized short story almost twenty years ago, is divided into three sections, each narrated by a different child from the same family: Jook-Liang, the "useless" female, whose main interests are going to movies, tap dancing, and imitating Shirley Temple; the adopted orphan Jung-Sum, the second oldest brother, who discover he's gay; and Sek-Lung, the youngest brother and the only one in the family born in Canada.
