What are these brown flower/leaf things?

I am looking for brown accents in a white/green bouquet. I found some brown flower/leaf things that I love. Does anyone know what these are? Here is a picture.

Any other suggestion for brown flowers would be great! I have looked at brown cosmos and peonies.

Thanks!

What are these brown flower/leaf things?
I thought it could be a variety of

PROTEA - the flower NOT be fully opened.

I have looked up the flower - but cant find any pics of them that colour so am NOT sure

looking further it could also be a * Leucadendron * which is part of the same family as the Protea
Reply:A brown flower that I am using in my bouquets are brown orchids. They are very pretty. Not as dark as the ones in your picture, but very nice just the same, if you don't mind them being lighter.
Reply:Calla lillies come in a dark maroon that is almost a brown. You should ask these pictures of your florist; sh/e may have ideas.
Reply:Could they possibly be tulips?

This is the only picture I was able to find that was even similar

http://books.google.com/books?id=kjW_40B...

Best bet of course is to bring it to your florist...good luck to you.
Reply:the flowers are gorgeous!! They look almost like magnolia leaves, but I'm not quite sure. You should take this picture to your florist, I'm sure they would know. You can also go with silk flowers, I think you would have more of a variety of brown. It would probably be less expensive too. Do talk to you florist tho.
Reply:It's a lovely bouquet. I'm not exactly sure what the flowers are. The petals look a bit like the sweet shrub which come in kind of a reddish brown color:

As for other brown flowers I've seen brown sunflowers, brown roses called Terra Nostra rose (they're pretty), brown gerberas, brown calla lilly, fiddlehead ferns (they're a bit odd looking you may not want them, but they do come in brown and I've seen them in bouquets before), pappaws

Can someone help me describe some of Manet's paintings?

I have to do this project for French class on a French painter. I got Edouard Manet and I have to describe at least 5 of his paintings.

I'm not very good at interpreting art so I need a little help.

I was wondering if someone could describe his paintings.

These are the ones I have on my powerpoint:

The Spanish Ballet (1862)

Branch of White Peonies and Pruning Shears (1864)

Le Fifre (1866)

The Railroad (1872)

The Grand Canal in Venice (1874)

Can someone help me?

Thanks

Can someone help me describe some of Manet's paintings?
In each case, start with name, date, and where it is located.

Then move to description - which is exactly you see: how many figures, what is the scene, or still life, how is arranged. Where are figures facing. What is in the background. What colors does the painter use. Is there light and shade, if so where does the light come from and fall. What is the brushwork like - smooth, rough, can you see the individual strokes?

Interpretation:

You can have your own ideas, but they should generally be backed up by something you know or have read:

The Spanish Ballet 1862. Oil on canvas. The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, read http://blogs.princeton.edu/wri152-3/pber...

Branch of White Peonies and Pruning Shears, 1864, oil on canvas, Musée d'Orsay, Paris

Le Fifre (the Fifer), 1866 (110 Kb); Oil on canvas, Musee d'Orsay, Paris

The Railroad, 1872, oil on canvas National Gallery of Art, Washington.

The meaning of a poetry in simple words?

The Things That Make a Soldier Great ~ Edgar Albert Guest (1918)

The things that make a soldier great and send him out to die,

To face the flaming cannon's mouth, nor ever question why,

Are lilacs by a little porch, the row of tulips red,

The peonies and pansies, too, the old petunia bed,

The grass plot where his children play, the roses on the wall:

'Tis these that make a soldier great. He's fighting for them all.

can someone summarize this stanza for me in simple English?! I know what it means, but I'm afraid my teacher will find flaws in my explanation. So I need someone's help. I wanted to say that, according to Edgar Guest, a soldier fights to keep some flowers flourishing always; to save his children from evil and keep them playing all the time. Would that be right?

The meaning of a poetry in simple words?
To me this poem by Guest means the soldier (no matter who or where) fights for "home."

This is represented by all those flowers = (which equal) his country; every city, town, homeplace and person. And of course the addition of 'where his children play' make that even more clear.

A soldier fights for his "home."

Luck on your school work.
Reply:Almost. To be more general, a soldier fights for the simple beautiful pleasures in life -- lilacs, tulips, children playing. This is making an argument that true bravery is not fighting for country (i.e., abtracts ideals like patriotism or honor) but for beauty and life. You can then say that Guest is implying that these things are the only things worth dying for.

At least that's my interpretation. Poetry offers itself up to different interpretations -- there is and never should be just one meaning of poetry.
Reply:People don't fight for big abstract ideas like freedom or nationalism. They fight, and are willing to die, for the small, ordinary, beautiful, familiar things in their lives.
Reply:Simply, Poetry is the motivation engine for all nations. soldiers, lovers, students to do what in the mind of the poet.
Reply:expression of fellings
Reply:What a trite and unrythmic poem. I hope your teacher didn't make you read this.

Please help identify painting - Manet?

It's a vase of peonies, mostly creamy white/light pinky peach with a few darker peach lowlights, with 2 large blooms and one small round (unopened flower) in a dark blue or black ceramic vase with gold trim around the base. There are leaves hanging out slightly on the left and right in the vase. To the left of the painting near the bottom are some green leafy areas, and on the left in the middle is a rounded shape resembling another piece of pottery, also dark with a lighter goldish line running around the middle. The rest of the painting is a seemingly random background of golden yellows, greys, blacks. I've located some similar paintings by Manet, but can't find this one. Pretty sure it is Manet, though.

Please help identify painting - Manet?

It's for AS eng lit and lang, and basically i don't have any sheets on how to write a commentery so does anyone have any straight to the point tips? Thank you

Some people have a childhood garden

Filled with green and growing things

Some people have a childhood garden

Filled with purple peonies

Mine is sere

Throughout the year

Nothing grows here

Some people have a childhood rainbow

A sea of colors all aglow

Some people have a childhood rainbow

Red to violet in a row

Mine is gray

Bow of clay

Without a ray

Some people have a childhood temple

Covered with a million treasured dreams

Some people have a childhood temple

A sunny Wat of Gods and kings

Mine is plain

Squats in the rain

Functional 'n sane

Where childhood memories abound

Life flows vividly around

Where childhood memories have fled

Hearts lie dead

Tim Bovee -

one at bottom is mine

Some people have a childhood home

Warm, soft and yielding

Some people have a childhood home

Peaceful, joyful and healing

Mines at war

Forever more

Behind a closed door

Some people have a childhood spirit

Boundlessly open and carefree

Some people have a childhood spirit

Everything that child wants to be

Mine is undone

The haunted one

Crazy as the sun

Some people have childhood memories

That they lovingly hold dear

Some people have childhood memories

Filled with tenderness and freedom from fear

Mine break my heart

Rip my sanity apart

Artists sick art

One plays games, one plays tricks

One pushes, one picks

So wrapped up they forget

The childs heavy heart in a cold sweat

Need great ideas for a Japanese type garden?

I have created a new area in my back yard and plan on putting a large Asian statue in the center of this area. I am working on an area behind where the statue will sit to plant bamboo in a controlled area. I am fixing a sort of tunnel and plan to put wisteria on it, to grow over the wire tunnel. I would like ideas on other plants to use in this area to enhance the statue and give an air or serenity. This will be a sort of *secret* garden, as you won't be able to see it all until you go through the tunnel.

I have thought about some peonies, and plan to use white gravel and have black enamel benches in it. I would like to use reds mostly, to give more impact to the overall effect.

I am in zone 6

Need great ideas for a Japanese type garden?
Azaleas would be nice. For a low growing tree that has that Asian look is the Mimosa. Most Asian Garden don't have alot of flowers in them, they are mostly evergreens is interesting shapes. For your "RED" how about placing high glazed red pots filled with small evergreens that you shape into your own style of Bonzais.
Reply:Nandina, called heavenly bamboo--the "domestica" variety has red berries...also, japanese plum yew...you can also plant Daylillies (Hemerocallis) in a grouping--"Chicago Apache" is a good red variety.

Have you considered a water feature, a small pond or fountain--for sound as well as a serene effect? Aqua Bella online is a site you might look at for ideas.
Reply:might be some help here...

http://images.google.com/images?q=Japane...

a great Japanese style garden looks great in all seasons... so be careful about the look of what you plant for when it's winter.... like, the peony will disappear in winter, so what will be in that spot then?.... will something behind it take it's place?... like an archetectural yucca or some red-twigged dogwood?....plan for the whole year for the best effect.... like the trees... they should be shapely evergreens or deciduous ones with either interesting shapes like 'weeping' or gnarly trunks or peeling bark.... the gravel, benches and arbor will hold up thru the winter just fine....the wisteria vines will be interesting, too.... but the bamboo should be chosen wisely.. there are types that are 'clumping' bamboos that don't need to be contained... look for them and save yourself some aggravation and work....

Can roses grow in heavy clay soil?

I keep hearing that roses can grow in heavy clay soil from doing some research on-line, but I'm skeptical. Here is what I have:

Soil - Clay

Moisture - Moist

Ph - 6.7 - 7.0

Zone - 8

Drainage - Poor to Fair

Plant success in current soil - Daylilies, Peonies, and Asters

Plant failures - Texas Sage

Is it possible to grow roses in clay? I am not too sold on ammending my soil because I have established plants in my garden now and I don't want to upset their balance by dig a giant hole to ammend soil.

Can roses grow in heavy clay soil?
Yes, Roses can grow well in heavy clay type soil. You can improve the moisture capability by adding ordinary sand into this area. Purpose of adding sand into clay soil is that it prevent frequent bricking of the soil and it prevents too much nitrogen escaping from those gaps. You might have to mix the soil atleast once a week thoroughly for better results.

The other idea is to put green leaves of some tree(which may not attract insect while decomposing like Azadirachta indica) into this area - this may provide you slow decomposing fertilizer and prevent bricking by bonding.

I have succesfuly grown roses in pure clay soil under extensive heat by adding sand, decomposing leaves. Actually, my dog died and we buried her near my lawn - she was very special - at that time I had only clay to cover the dig - later I planned to plant Gardenia, Rose, Jasmine - Rose %26amp; Jasmine grew up without any problem except Gardenia

So you dont have dig any part of your lawn - just add sand and you will have Roses !!!!!!!!

Please check the following links for clay soil care and plants for it.

http://gardening.about.com/od/gardendesi...

http://www.ehow.com/how_16885_water-clay...
Reply:Why not build raised beds or planter boxes to elevate your roses 8 to 12 inches above the clay layer? That way, you can improve the soil and the drainage at the same time. It will minimize weed growth and greatly improve the appearance of your rose garden.

Use some 2x8, 2x10 or 2x12 redwood or cedar boards to frame your rose bed. Dig the clay soil about 6 to 12 inches deep, and add some compost or other amendments to improve the foundation. Then fill your rose box with high quality topsoil and plant your roses. Water well and fertilize monthly during the growing season with fish emulsion per the directions.
Reply:It depends on the type of Rose %26amp; of course is it red clay? There are many wild Rose's that can grow in odd place's %26amp; need little care, however I believe I would buy some top soil for starters if it was me. Have a nice day. Mimi
Reply:i dont think they can i would dig a huge hole and add better dirt like topsoil or you could just build a raised bed and plant roses in it then you can make the soil perfect for your roses
Reply:All we have is clay here, and roses do great. We dig the hole out much deeper and wider than the roots. (much wider like 2 feet in diameter at least). Fill around rose with compost or potting soil. It will get going and dig into the clay just fine.
Reply:The clay itself is OK, but the drainage might be a problem . Try a couple %26amp; find out . Also try this . Dig down ~ 1/3 as deep as you need for the whole root ball . Then mound soil /compost/manure ( whatever you are using, but some manure is very good for 'em) around it the rest of the way . See what works out better . Don't dig a hole in the clay and fill it with a different type of soil , esp. if the site is level. You get what's known as the "Bathtub Effect" . Water CAN move more readily through the amended soil, ...so it does. You can actually end up concentrating water in the hole .

ps . (this applies to roses in any situation ) If any of the roses should happen to die , remember rule of 3 . ( 3yrs or 3ft. or 3 cu. ft) Rose roots give off some chemical(s) that will kill any subsequent roses. Nobody knows yet, quite how it works, but it does . I've seen a lot of dead roses , %26amp; once I heard that, at least half were explained by it. If a rose dies , you need to wait 3 yrs, replace the soil for 3 ft in every direction, or plant the new one at least 3 ft away . Got this info from a knowledgeable source who got it from Adrian Bloom (Blooms of Bressingham) %26amp; a couple other growers, so trust it completely . Mention this because it's fairly recent , %26amp; not in wide circulation .
Reply:we have the same environment here, i think, in the Philippines as you mention the qualities of your soil. it would grow as normal and as easy. just dug the whole and plant it.
Reply:yes they can just remember they like good drainage and you need to put a few rocks in the hole you are digging for them .put the rocks at the bottom and then fill with water and then plant and then finish with the soil . good luck .
Reply:just dig the hole as big or a little bit bigger then the root ball and ammend it! they will certainly die in clay soil! i've tried it. so far i've planted and dug back up my new roses about 6 times this year and they're just now starting to do good!

I miss my Iris from my former house?

I sold my house in the winter and left alot of meaningful flowers mainly Iris and Peonies and many were heirlooms from my family and some I recieved as gifts. Would be inappropriate to stop by and ask if I could take some of the rhizomes to my new house? What would you do if someone asked you? Also in others peoples yards - have you ever asked if you could swap with them?

I miss my Iris from my former house?
I couldn't take them with us when we moved in January 2004 because of freezing temperatures, so I went back in May when I could get some of each variety of iris (several you have mentioned). We had taken good care of them, so they were thriving, and the owner was glad to share, and I weeded their flower beds in return.
Reply:I don't know why you couldn't at least try. I'd probably let them know what sentimental value they have, and at least ask if you could divide them. Irises need to be divided when they get too big anyway--my husband loves to go to garage sales just so he can find places with irises and offer to pay for a start of them. If someone came to my house under your circumstances, I'm sure the irises would be big enough to divide, and I'd probably give you some (but that's me).
Reply:You betcha. What do you want? Will gladly share.

The new owners would probably love to know what's planted where. I'd ask....and probably take them a house plant in trade.
Reply:Absolutely yes! Gardeners love to share.
Reply:You sold the house and everything that goes with it. It is not right to go ask for something that no longer belongs to you for free. It does not matter whether they had meaning.....if you did not think to take them to begin with they are not yours. There is no reason why the new owner should have to spend time and money filling holes with flowers because you want them back. Why not go out and just get more flowers?

Twilight Fans!!! Does anybody know any good fan fiction for Twilight??

I want to read some fan fiction but I don't know which one to read. I DON'T like the ones where they are ALL HUMAN and the ones that are too far fetched. Also..please no "Edward and Tonya" stuff. I would also appreciate it if there were no BellaxJacob fan fiction either.

Please do not suggest "Peonies" it is TOO SAD!

I would prefer something funny or"fluffy".

Fan fiction I liked:

-Parenting Skills

-Stories by Silly Bella

-The one where all of the Cullens give Bella a human experience to complete

Thank you and please post the link to the story.

P.S. I already no that www.ramblingsandthoughts.com and the Twilight archive at ww.fanfiction.net are good sites. So please don't post those links. Please post links to SPECIFIC stories!

Algebra 2 help?

Please help me with these problem.

Solve the equation for y. Then find the value of y for the given value x.

1) 3xy-4x=19 ; x=2

2) 11y+2xy=9 ; x= -5

Solve. And explain how you got the answer.

3) A chess tutor charges a fee for the first lesson that is 1.5 times the fee for later lessons. You spend $315 for 10 lessons. How much does the first lesson cost? How much does a later lesson cost?

4) You buy some calla lilies and peonies at a flower store. Calla lilies cost $3.50 each and peonies cost $5.50 each. The total cost of 12 flowers is $52. how many calla lilies and how many peonies did you buy?

Algebra 2 help?
1) 3xy-4x=19 ; x=2

taking x common:

x(3y-4)=19

3y-4=19/x

3y=19/x + 4 =(19+4x)/x

y=(19+4x)/(x*3)=(19+4x)/3x

putting the value of x in (19+4x)/3x:

y=(19+8)/(3*2)

y=27/6

dividing by 3

y=9/2

y=4.5

2)11y+2xy=9 ; x= -5

taking y common:

y(11+2x)=9

y=9/(11+2x)

putting the value of x in y=9/(11+2x)

y=9/[11+(2*-5)]

y=9/[11+(-10)]

y=9/(11-10)

y=9/1

y=9

3) let the fee for 1 later lesson = $x

therefore, fee for first lesson = $1.5x

no. of later lessons = 10-1=9

total fee for all the lessons = fee for first lesson + fee for 9 later lessons=$1.5x+$9x

therefore, 1.5x+9x=315

10.5x=315

x=315/10.5=3150/105=30

therefore, cost of a later lesson = $x = $30

4) let the no. of calla lilies = x and no. of peonies = y

total no. of flowers = 12

therefore, x+y=12

total cost of flowers = $52

therefore, 3.50x+5.50y=52

solve these simultaneous equations:

x+y=12 and 3.50x+5.50y=52

by substitution method:

x+y=12

therefore, x=12-y

putting this value of x in 3.50x+5.50y=52

3.50(12-y)+5.50y=52

42-3.50y+5.50y=52

42+2y=52

2y=52-42

2y=10

y=10/2

y=5

putting this value of y in x+y=12

x+5=12

x=12-5

x=7

therefore, no. of calla lilies bought by you = x = 7

and no. of peonies bought by you = y = 5

Vintage/ Victorian Wedding?

Hi all! My wedding is this June 2008. I dont want to have a themed wedding but I want to add some stuff from the theme "victorian" or "vintage" weddings. My dress looks very vintage so I thought this would be a good fit. I can't decide what to do with the centerpieces and candles around the centerpieces??? I know I want to have pale pink peonies. Also, any ideas on the ceremony--for vintage touches?? If anyone has every done this before I'd LOVE to see pictures. ica2905@yahoo.com Thanks for your help :)

Interpretation of PO-CHU-I poem "BUYING FLOWERS"?

BUYING FLOWERS

In the capital, Spring comes late;

The noisy chariots and horses are passing.

They say, "It is the time of the peonies."

So they come together to buy flowers.

Prices, high and low, may change,

But also it depends on how much you buy,

Hundredsshine bright red.

There is a bouquet white as crystal.

Sheltered by curtains overhead.

And constructed on a bamboo framework

Water and set in mud.

These are the old colors, but changed.

Question:

Why did the people spend so much for flowers?

What does the speaker lament about this custom of spending so much for flowers?

Interpretation of PO-CHU-I poem "BUYING FLOWERS"?
Well if it was in the "capital" then it was a city so flowers probably didn't grow much around there. When people brought flowers to the city to sell, it was probably something like a craze. They were probably high since they were so hard to come by. Also, the speaker says that some are high and some are low, depending on how much you buy, so that does not necessarily mean he spent a small fortune. After all, red roses on valentines day are not cheap flowers, depending on how many you buy.

**To Felix, I had never read this poem before and after reading your response, I totally get that from the poem as well. The red flowers being "tainted" girls and the white, the virgins? Is this supposed to be like men paying for Geishas virginity?
Reply:It is all about young girls losing their virginity

At my sisters wedding, she chose a burgundy dress!my other sister is wearing lilac, mom's wearing green?!?

i havent chosen my dress yet, but im mad cause i think the colors arent going to look good together... her wedding will be very untraditional, but what color do ya'll think i should wear... it'll be in austin at chapeldulcinea.com... also the day of we are going to a florist and picking out flowers to make for her bouqet, i thought since she sint wearing white a bouqout of white flowers might be special... maybe white roses w/ white peonies... then we will all wear matching flowers, and flowers in our hair, i need a cool updo, too

At my sisters wedding, she chose a burgundy dress!my other sister is wearing lilac, mom's wearing green?!?
maybe you should go with something similar to the lilac so you and your sister will be somewhat the same (assuming you both are in the wedding)..let mom be a little different..and if the bride is wearing burgandy..I think white flowers would be really pretty with her dress..and the colors you all are wearing.

Reply:If you are not "in" the wedding, it doesn't matter what color you wear. If you are, it's the bride who picks the colors. If she has not, and has told everybody to wear "whatever they want", then do it. Don't worry about it if the bride is not.

European Garden Theme Wedding?? Need some advice?

We finally decided on a theme for our wedding. My fiance is wearing a kilt, so we wanted something Scottish or European to fit with the kilt. We finally settled on a European or British Garden theme and here's what I have so far:

Colors (to match kilt): Navy blue and champagne with light blue and ivory accents

Flowers: Hydrangeas, ivory roses, peonies, rannunculas (sp?) and ivy

Favors: Plantable blue paper hearts that double as escort cards - they grow wildflowers when you plant the paper in the ground.

Bridesmaids: Tea length satin bubble dresses in navy blue with champagne sashes

Groomsmen: Black tuxes with navy blue or champagne vests (haven't decided yet)

I'm looking for more ways to tie in the theme with the decor for the reception and the ceremony. We'll probably do bunches of flowers tied to the ends of the chairs for church decorations, but does anyone have anymore suggestions? Unique ideas? Thanks!

European Garden Theme Wedding?? Need some advice?
Try to watch "Four Weddings and a Funeral" a british comedy from a few years back, staring Hugh Grant. In the movie, you can see 4 different weddings (one of them a scotish wedding wuth kilts)... I think that you can gather some cute ideas from this movie.

Good luck
Reply:I was on vacation and went to a wedding! I will post the details later, I just got back to work and my desk is piled up with work...but I have to share with you guys the details of this faboulus wedding, hands down, the best wedding I've ever been to. Report It

Reply:Serve tea during the time that would be the cocktail hour. I think that would be really cute - you can probably find some really nice pale blue cups and saucers. Then with the flower seeds, send a bag or two of the tea you drank home with your guests.

Maybe give your maids parasoles that are light blue and ivory as cute gifts and use them during your pictures.

Use doilies for the bottom of your center pieces, lots of tea light candles floating in bowls with peonies, have a bagpipe player play a song when you arrive at your reception, have your guests blow bubbles when you leave ... I can't really think of anything else ... but hopefully those are some ideas you can play off of.

Perfume for your astrology sign part TWO for Leo through libra?
Leo %26amp; Libra

When Leo and Libra join together in a love match, theirs is an agreeable union. Being situated two signs apart in the Zodiac, Leo and Libra experience a deep understanding of the inner-workings of the other. When the Lion's unbounded energy mixes with Libra's natural sense of harmony, this is a romance of great balance. Leo and Libra are both outlandish versus reserved, direct versus peace loving. They can enjoy a very smooth relationship because each can appreciate and benefit from the positive attributes of the other.

Libra calms and soothes Leo's flamboyance. As a couple, Leo and Libra are well balanced. Libra lays on the charm and good manners, which tame Leo's direct and acerbic personality. But Leo is far more decisive than Libra. Leo can help their partners to make decisions more easily and act on them, and they can teach the art of spontaneity.

Leo is ruled by The Sun and Libra is ruled by the Planet Venus. The two Signs coming together form the basic foundation of relationships -- warmth and passion. The Sun and Venus go well together. The sun is a masculine energy and Venus a feminine, so this relationship strikes a balance between energies. Venus is about the beauty of romance, and The Sun is about invigorating life spreading warmth. This couple sustain one another for a long time.

Leo is a Fire Sign and Libra is an Air Sign. These two elements combined either fuel one another seemlessly or diminish one another's efforts. Libra can negotiate with the impetus and vigor of Leo, and both partners tend to take part in one another's projects. They have established a perfect balance and tick clockwork! When they are joined, anything is possible, but this couple must be mindful of one another's feelings and desires. Leo's action-oriented approach to may conflict with Libra's more passive, come-what-may outlook. Both Signs have a variety of interests, and Leo's need to get involved gives them great stories to share with the more reserved Libra.

Leo is a Fixed Sign and Libra is a Cardinal Sign. Leo's endurance outpaces the fleeting whims of Libra, the initiator. They have to work together to make their dreams come true. Leo will be the leader because of their strength and forceful nature. Libra will quietly take the reins from an intellectual and team-oriented perspective. Leo likes to give orders through personal authority while Libra charms others into doing things and is happy to placating Leo's giant ego. It's important for Leo to understand sacrifice. Libra, able to see both sides of the argument, can compromise easily, while Leo may be more put out over having to yield.

What's the best aspect of the Leo-Libra relationship? It's the harmony resulting from the union of Venus and The Sun. The balance between self and other represented by this relationship is a great learning experience for both partners. Each partner makes up for what the other is missing, so theirs is a highly compatible relationship.

Flowers for weddings?

what is the cheapest flowers, when buying per stem for a wedding, besides silk - I would like gerber daisies, roses, and peonies.

Flowers for weddings?
I think daisies would be the cheapest flowers
Reply:It all depends on what time of year you're going to have you're wedding.Sometimes flowers are cheaper during the winter. because not alot of people buy flowers during the winter. people get flowers mostly during the summer and spring and they always get them on Valentines day. Valentines day is a big time of the year for flowers.and there expensive during that time. best of luck. flowers are more expensive during the Holidays like Christmas, thanksgiving,Valentines day and mothers day are the most busiest times of they year that people are getting flowers and there not as cheap
Reply:Carnations and Dasies are generally the cheapest flower.

If you are looking for stems to do your own flowers check this site out.

http://www.growersbox.com/roses.html
Reply:Depends on where you live %26amp; the time of year.
Reply:The time of year is a major consideration in pricing of flowers. Definitely check if your flower is in season when determining cost.

Carnations are often not that much cheaper than other flowers when used in respect to a wedding.

You may want to check out your local Sam's Club, as they do wedding packages for much less than a regular florist. Also grocery store florists too.

You must let the florist know your budget right off, if they are not willing to work with you, then you do not want to book them

Reply:I am using Calla Lillies and they are $10 a piece. You could have each bridemaid carry one...

Ladies.. any of you DONT like roses?

I am interested to know if there are any other women out there like myself who hate roses? If yes, why don't you like them? What is your favorite flowers?

I dont like roses because I find them to be very cliche and frankly, I dont think they are the prettiest. I perfer tulips or peonies.

Ladies.. any of you DONT like roses?
Um...roses are very cute, but yeah, your right about them. I really like Tulips or Ranunculus's.
Reply:Nope! I love Roses! (especially blue and Red ones!)
Reply:I don't hate them, but I'm not a fan of any flowers given in a boquet, really. I'd prefer them to be alive and I'm not fond of a flower's scent but, if I must have flowers, I'd prefer lilies.

Wedding Centerpieces?

I want some honest opions please..even critical ones too!

I am getting married Sept 15 of this year and still wondering about table decor and center pieces. The tables are long and rectangular. I was thinking of using tall vases with 3 lilies/peonies (switching it up on tables) and putting some stuff called ice crystals in them and having votives on the sides and for the tables that I do not put flowers on putting a round bowl that isnt very deep with the ice crystals and putting floating candles and rose petals in them. My colors are pool blue (kinda teal) and a dark pink color. I was also considering putting candles on mirrors. I have been considering using rock salt and putting different sized candles in there instead. Im confused and do not know what will work best. I want different things on my tables and not all of them the same. Like on half of them flowers and the other half candles with something. HELP!!! I just dont know what will work the best!!!

Wedding Centerpieces?
What you mentioned sounds great. I think they will look really pretty. Alternating them is a good idea. The vases with flowers will be pretty, and putting the candles in rock salt is very unique and should go really well with the ice crystals in the vases. You have great ideas, just go with what you have pictured in your head and you won't go wrong! Congrats, and good luck.
Reply:I think you've got some great ideas. I like the idea of mixing it up and not doing the same thing at every table. I say go for it!
Reply:Avoid the candles, especially if they're just votives sitting on the table, or on mirrors.

It is harder to manuever your stuff on a rectangular table than on a circular one. Appetizer plates, water glasses, purses, dinner plates, favors, etc. all get pushed around to make room for what the person is eating right then. It's too easy for something to knock one of the candles. Go with a simple vase with a few flowers, and leave it at that.
Reply:Don't use scented flowers. You don't want anyone breaking into a sneezing fit if they are allergic. But it sounds okay to me with the lily replacement. Not sure how peonies smell.

I'd skip the rock salt and go with that rock stuff that goes in the bottom of fish tanks.

Remember don't go to tall on the vases, people like to see each other when they are talking. Tall vase will cut the table off from each other.
Reply:I think because your tables are long and rectangular, you don't want to use tall vases and lillies that will create a vacant empty look unless you are planning to line the table with them - say spread them apart by a foot. Just putting one in the middle of each table won't work. I've seen what you are talking about and usually it sits in the middle of a round table. For longer tables you want to use shorter vases or do the fish bowls filled with the crystal ice - that would look lovely. And if you put a votive in the middle of the bowl AND sit the bowl on mirrors, it will give it a very pretty sparkly glow (if you use this on the tables remember to keep the lights "expensive restaurant" low to get the ambiance you want). Whatever you do I'm sure it will be lovely - just try to avoid too many variations on a theme, you don't want it to look confusing and uncoordinated. Good luck.
Reply:I think you have some great ideas, and plenty of them too. Just because it's a rectangular table though, I don't think I would do vases with 3 flowers in them. It's going to look pretty bare. An idea I thought of while reading your question was this.

You can go to ikea, and purchase odd shaped, preferably long and narrow (rectangular shaped) glass pieces. it would be really neat to have almost a long pond down the centre of the table. Fill it with water, put some of the glass chips (in your colours) at the bottom, have some floating candles in some, flowers in others, maybe lil other floating things that you can find, you could get assorted shapes of floating candles I assume. You could also do a long mirror and have assorted things on the mirror, like you had mentioned, the candles, that are different sizes. Mixing the tables up sounds neat too! I just think that with a large rectangular table, it's not a good deal to have small bits here and there on it, use the space that you're given! :)

Good luck!

Flowers for Wedding?

I was just wondering if anyone has been quoted for calla lillies and pink peonies for their wedding...especially if you're getting married in late may.

I just gave a florist my flower ideas and she has to get back with me but I'm wanting to know some prices to compare.

She already warned me that pink peonies are expensive.

Please help!

Flowers for Wedding?
You can buy them whole sale from the internet.

Simply google them./ I was just seeing a great place online yesterdaym they were selling 400 mini-calla lilies for only $200...and free shipping. The long stemmed one were more expensive, but not that much.

Sorry that I don;t have the link right now, let me find it and I will publish it later

EDIT: Here it is:

http://www.flowers.pacificcallas.com/cal...
Reply:i looked up some flowers in a local shop here

pams flowers in kingston Ontario.

the ones i wanted were 129 for some lilacs and some other things.. crazy..
Reply:Prices may vary depending on the area you live in. Have you thought about silk florals? That may solve the buggy problem.

I have seen many different pieces from Jeanies florals and I would highly reccomend her.You can't even tell that she uses silks, they are that good!

Otherwise I would suggest to call around to other florists in your area to see what prices are like.

Good luck!
Reply:do something else- peonies are buggy and floppy
Reply:I lived in the Texas panhandle and I had calla lilies/roses and hydrangeas in my wedding. I chose the hydrangeas as an alternative to the peonies (they are both large flowers, and in a bouquet, they give the same effect). My bouquet was going to be well over $300 with the peonies, but by changing over to hydrogen's, my bouquet was $100. Hope this helps!
Reply:Well actually you picked the two most expensive flowers out there. Next is stephanotis. They are a bit pricey and depending on what you want to spend you may want to opt for different kinds. I wanted stock, roses and stephantois. I thought I was gonna get a hugh bouquet for 300 bucks. But I was very upset to see it was no bigger than the bridesmaids when they dropped it off. So you may want to rethink your choices.
Reply:Pink peonies are expensive...calla lillies can be expensive but are usually about midrange. You have definately not chosen budget friendly blooms.

You can't compare your prices to people on Y!answers because they are in completely diff. parts of the country. They will have diff. seasons, diff. shipping costs, diff. flowers that are grown locally, everything.

What you need to do is go to several other florists in your area and get their quotes on the exact same package and compare that to what your chosen florist comes back with.
Reply:We need more information. How many arrangments? How many bouquets?

Those are too very expensive flowers and you should be prepared for a expensive quote.

Also be aware the peonies open up very quickly and if you are in an area that is warm and humid they may open fully before you want them too.
Reply:silk is cheaper, start as early as possible and they can watch for them to be on sale. add some roses to save on the cost also.

I love 8 perfume from Abercrombie & Finch. Are there any other similar fragrances out there?

I'm willing to spend a lot of money too. From what i've researched the fragrance notes are:

A bright, fresh fragrance created to compliment the warmth and excitement of spring. Our limited edition 8 Uncovered opens with lush yellow freesia and sweet plum blossom ripe with the heat of the season and the desire to bare your skin. Revealed in its heart are notes of rain-kissed peony and soft rose. Clean violet, soothing vanilla, and spicy amber give this unforgettable fragrance a smooth, velvety finish.

8's scent is full of zest. Its spicy floral fragrance is warm, invigorating, and completely exciting. Both casual and provocative, its the perfect warm and inviting scent for day or night.

What are these plants/ trees/ flowers?

I have been cleaning out my back yard and want to make sure there is nothing poisonous and identify various other things.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/22699350@N0...

Yard 14 is a vine with 3 leaves on each point, making sure not poisonous.

Yard 13 is a bamboo like bush, took pics before of them dead (hollow red stems in winter) just want to make sure they don't spread.

Yard 8 and 6, have no idea, weeds or poison oak/ivy?

Yard 5 is pretty little blue flowers

Yard 3 has huge (same size as hands) leaves and thick smooth stem, very tall growing in few spots in yard, typically shade.

Yard 12 very tall like Iris' (happens to be in their bed) maybe peony? just started to have bud a few days ago and now huge bud showing

Yard 9, 7, 4, 2, %26amp; 1 poison sumac?, growing all down one side of my fence

Last 3 are of a tree, I took a picture in January (last pic) and no one knew for sure, now it has leaves and these cute little 5 point purple flowers.

Appreciate any help!

What are these plants/ trees/ flowers?
13 is an invasive non-native plant that should be removed and destroyed. It's non-poisonous.

5 looks like spiderwort - a native species to US, non-invasive and worth keeping around. I have it growing in my front yard. No problem with spreading.

8 looks like the invasive tree of heaven or black walnut.
Reply:I only recognize #5 which is spiderwort, a pretty perennial with a blue flower. It can be invasive and will pop up in unexpected places.

#12 is a peony.
Reply:Yard 12 is a peony.

Yard 5 is an invasive but pretty wild plant (spiderwort)

Several others look like weeds to me.

Presents. what do you think?

I'm actually Jewish lol. In my family the adults exchange gifts and give them to the kids. The kids usually make something. I make latkes and matzo ball soup and clean the house, so my gift to the family is helping and I will usually make something as I am artistic. My brother is a lazy fat kid so he does nothing. So here's what I'm thinking of telling my parents when they ask me what I want:

ice skates

liz claiborne luggage marina 3-piece set(we're going to england, france, and switzerland this summer, and over winter break to chicago and maybe New York)

some books =]

what do you think?? I'm getting myself nars lipgloss, and stella peony in two perfume. I know that sounds weird but I never spend my money so might as well. I'll probably get my closest friends some chocolate from the chocolatier.

Presents. what do you think?
Sounds good to me, the things that you want are practical and you are going to need them anyway since you are plannig a great holiday!

My sugestion is that instead of chocolate maybe give your closest friends a small painted canvas (you said you were artistic - painting?) or something like that so that have something tangable to keep - chocolate would be gone in an hour if you gave it to me. canvas' are really cheap too.

Now I too think that giving presents is great but I would be so guttered if I didnt get any presents for christmas! I love Christmas and I am nearly 26!!! Bring on santa!!
Reply:What about your family members, I notice you are buying for yourself, don't you buy for them too? It is better to give than to receive. This will probably be the fourth of fifth Christmas that I don't get a gift, but my gift is watching the looks on others faces as they open their gift from me.
Reply:I agree with diane

Desginer perfumes?

Hi,

I'm thinking about asking for a designer perfume for Winter Solstice, but most of the designer perfumes I've smelled smell like old lady (No offense meant to anyone!) and I have a very sensitive nose, so perfumes that are powdery, have overpowering scents or have lots of white flowers or musk in them give me a headache.

I REALLY just want a designer scent that's flirty, fun and fresh.

These are the perfumes I've tried that're out of the question:

Miss Dior Cherie

Any Chanel perfume

L (LAMB by Gwen Stefani)

Vera Wang Princess

Nina by Nina Ricci

My Insolence - Guerlain

Burberry Brit

With Love - Hilary Duff

Baby Phat

The kinds of scents I like:

CK One Summer

Paris Hilton

CK IN2U

Green tea

Citrusy scents

CHOCOLATE!! lol

Green apples

Flowers like peony, gardenia, rose, etc.

Any help is MUCH appreciated!!!! Thanks! =)

Desginer perfumes?
I know a great chocolate scent! It is Amour De Cacao by Comptoir Sud Pacific. It's not too foody but definitely a deep chocolate scent. I think you would like it. Sephora has it online, don't know about the store. My favorite etailer, Bissy's Boutique makes a great dupe of it but she's currently out of it. You could email her and see when she might have it again!

http://bissysboutique.com/store/
Reply:I am into floral scents myself and the above scents mentioned are the ones I've been a big fan of. Why not try Bulgari's Omnia Amethyste. It is a delicate scent of iris %26amp; rose. You can get that at Sephora.

You'll never go wrong with DKNY Be delicious (green). It is subtle and nor overpowering, truly sweet.

I've always like First by Arpel's

I also like Laura Biogotti-OH LORDY, such a heavenly scent!

Try them and let me know how it goes.
Reply:There is this one perfume that I adore. It is called Escada. Im not sure which one it is because there are 2 but it smells sweet and not overpowering. It smells awesome and people always tell me how good I smell! =D It smells kind of like Lemonade but sweeter and it makes me want to eat myself (ok, just a little odd.) lol.

Hope I helped! =D

-Kait
Reply:I'm surprised you don't like Miss Dior Cherie, With Love and Princess by Vera Wang! All 3 are excellent perfumes that are flirty and fun.

Hmm scents you might like...

Touch of Pink by Lacoste

Victorias Secret Perfume

Coach perfumes

And I've tried Can Can, and I have to say, it's absoutely wonderful!! It smells ahmazing, I highly recommend it.

Happy Winter Solstice!!

Reply:Ok the BEST that was ever on the market is "DKNY" New York, by Donna Karan.

It was developed in 2000. The scent is Fresh and citrus with just a hint of flower.

It has: Orange flower, Grapefruit, Lotus and it's base is Vodka.

It is never overpowering, always stays the way it smells originally and only gets better.

Go to Fragrancenet.com you can only now get it on the internet.

Another great one is : Emporio Armani White

Very sensual, not sweet, not spicy and just warm and clean. you will love it. Only on internet also

One you can get at Sephora is "Fresh" "Hespirides". Also a grapefruit sensual scent that lasts all day long and is unbelievably yummy. It is approx 62.00 for a 1.7oz.
Reply:for a "fresh" try the banana republic perfume. its different and i love it. I have three favorites personally. Dior- Addict, Gucci- Envy Me and Michael by Michael Korrs

Breast support for wedding dress....?

Hello,

I'm getting married next month, and I need to find a great bra/bustier/some kind of support for my wedding dress. Here's what it looks like:

http://www.justinalexanderbridal.com/us_...

What are your recommendations?

Also, I love everything about this dress BUT the low-cut sweetheart neckline. My seamstress is going to close the gap a little, but I was thinking of sticking some fresh, white flowers, such as baby's breath and a white rose or a peony down there to cover it. I think it'd be a romantic idea. What do you think?

Breast support for wedding dress....?
Just wanted to say . . .

I think that is a lovely gown!

My recommendation would be to go to your local bridal shop. See what lingerie they have available . . . and ask them what will work best with your gown. Usually the bridal shop ladies are experts! They will know and will be happy to advise you.

Good luck with your shopping.
Reply:Have your seamstress build cups into the lining of your dress if possible. It's usually cheaper than buying an expenive piece you'll only wear once. Very pretty dress. Don't stick anything in it.
Reply:WoW! Your dress is amazing!! Might I suggest that you have ur seamstress put cups in ur dress... this way you are free to move around with out a bra showing or poking you all night! Good Luck and Congrats!!
Reply:That's a GORGEOUS dress...don't ruin it by sticking dead flowers between your boobs.

No matter how you try to play it (romantic or not) they're flowers....down your dress.....don't do it.

Get to Victoria Secret and have them fit you properly. They'll hook you up with an awesome bra (though it is a bit pricey...usually about 50 bucks for a bra). It will, however, make you look amazing.

Good luck
Reply:Your dress is GORGEOUS!!

Look at http://www.fredericks.com/category.asp?c...

They have great items for under wedding dresses
Reply:hope one of this helps you....good luck

CONGRATULATIONS
Reply:The dress is beautiful just like it is. If you are having the front modified forget the putting flowers there. I hope you are having a wonderful wedding. The dress is beautiful. And if you are wearing the dress so are you

Also if you are after a bustier look don't have the dress altered.
Reply:Love the dress! I had the seamstress sew in some cups. You don't want to be pulling up a bra or bustier all night. The cups will push you up and keep you in place.
Reply:your dress is beautiful and pretty! well i think you should wear a white lace singlet underneath the dress gives coverage while looking sexy at the same time, buy a nice expensive white lace singlet, soft lace because it will show with the dress and you would want it to look like its part of the dress

:) have lots of fun at your wedding and keep us up to date hun.
Reply:For starters, your dress is absolutely lovely. Regardless of wether it's being altered at the neckline or not, don't stick flowers down your cleavage. There is already embelishment on the gown in that area, and adding flowers will just look tacky, or trashy, depending on the point of view. If you want a flower on you that isn't in your bouquet, try putting rose buds in your hair, or another small white blossom. That will give you more of the romantic look you are wanting.

As for a bra, here are a few suggestions:

http://confidentiallyyoursonline.com/pro...

http://www.ballroomgifts.com/NuBra.html

http://www.outblush.com/women/fashion/li... This one can be worn 100 diffrent ways

http://advantagebridal.com/undergarments...

Hope some of these help! And congratulations on your wedding!!
Reply:I would purchase a backless, strapless bra. Just make sure you put baby powder on your skin before puttng the bra, stockings, and undergarments on. It will keep you cooler and make you a lot more comfortable. As for the low cut sweetheart neckline, letting your seamstress close the gap a little is fine. Calling attention to the low cut neckline by putting flowers in your cleavage is crass and low class. You want to de-emphasize the sweetheart neckline in one sentence and in the next you want to emphasize it. Just let the seamstress do her job and leave well enough alone.

Need Book Reccomendations?
The Girl with No Shadow

Harris revisits characters from 1999's bestselling Chocolat in this equally delectable modern fairy tale. More than four years have passed since Vianne Rocher pitted her enchanted chocolate confections against the local clergy's interpretation of Lent in smalltown France; since then, Vianne has renounced magic, changed her name to Yanne Charbonneau and moved with her two daughters to Paris's Montmartre district. There, Yanne embraces conformity and safety, much to the dismay of her increasingly troubled older daughter, Anouk. When Anouk becomes entranced with Zozie de l'Alba, an exotic itinerant who happens upon a job at the new shop, and the relationship grows increasingly sinister, Yanne must call up all of Vianne's powers, culinary and mystical, to save her family. Harris again structures the narrative (told in alternate chapters by Zozie, Yanne and Anouk) around a liturgical season (in this case Advent). Harris gives fans much to savor in this multilayered novel, from the descriptions (including Yanne's mouthwatering chocolate confections, Zozie's whimsical footwear and Anouk's artistic efforts) to the novel's classic, enduring theme of good vs. evil—and the difficulty of telling the difference.

Unaccustomed Earth

Starred Review. The gulf that separates expatriate Bengali parents from their American-raised children—and that separates the children from India—remains Lahiri's subject for this follow-up to Interpreter of Maladies and The Namesake. In this set of eight stories, the results are again stunning. In the title story, Brooklyn-to-Seattle transplant Ruma frets about a presumed obligation to bring her widower father into her home, a stressful decision taken out of her hands by his unexpected independence. The alcoholism of Rahul is described by his elder sister, Sudha; her disappointment and bewilderment pack a particularly powerful punch. And in the loosely linked trio of stories closing the collection, the lives of Hema and Kaushik intersect over the years, first in 1974 when she is six and he is nine; then a few years later when, at 13, she swoons at the now-handsome 16-year-old teen's reappearance; and again in Italy, when she is a 37-year-old academic about to enter an arranged marriage, and he is a 40-year-old photojournalist. An inchoate grief for mothers lost at different stages of life enters many tales and, as the book progresses, takes on enormous resonance. Lahiri's stories of exile, identity, disappointment and maturation evince a spare and subtle mastery that has few contemporary equals.

The Host: A Novel

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.
Reply:Time Travelers Wife, Poison Study by Maria V Snyder, Veil of Roses, Other Boylen Girl, Lovely Bones, March, Eat Love Pray, Last Lecture, Three Cups of Tea, Water for Elephants, Memory Keepers Daughter, Thousand Splendid Suns, Unaccustomed Earth, Love Walked In, Belong to Me, Remember Me, Good In Bed, Breaking Her Fall, Lost and Found, Then She Found Me, Past Secrets, Secret Life of Bees, Thirteenth Tale, Names My Sisters Call Me, History of Love, P.S. I love You, Inheritance of Loss, Whole World Over

Most of these can be found in the fiction literature section
Reply:Hi RedPower, I never have enough time, and now as a Y/A addict I have even less! So I don't read much fiction, but have you read, "The Lakota Way" by Joseph Marshall III? It gives such a great perspective of the Lakota philosophy. Oh, and I recently read "Ride the Wind" by Lucia St. Clair Robson. It is the story of Cynthia Ann Parker, the white wife of the Comanche Nacona, and mother of Quanah Parker, the last of the Comanche to surrender at Fort Sill, OK. While it is fiction, it is based on actual events.

Happy readings!
Reply:Try reading some Mo Yan (Red Sorghum is a good starting point.)

I loved a Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu Guo

I also really liked The Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak.

Sherman Alexie is a fantastic Native American author. His latest is YA, but the rest of his stuff is for adults.

Louise Erdrich is another Native American author. I'll admit I've only read her stuff for children, but it was very good and she has several adult novels.

Hope that helps!
Reply:I'd suggest Battle Royale if you were into that kind of thing, but it doesn't seem like you are so my suggestions are:

Summerland by Michael Chabon

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie (good for both children and adults)

Anything by James Herriot (if you like animals)

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole (satire)

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner

The Incident of the Curious Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Anything else by Paulo Coelho

The Metamorphosis and Other Stories by Franz Kafka

Hope this helps. I know they might not be your usual type, but they are really great books.
Reply:I really like Ted Dekker's books. They are a little dark, but have light endings. One of his books that isn't dark is called "Blink of an Eye." Some of his other books that you may like are Black, Red, and White. They are a trilogy.
Reply:Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. One of the best books I've ever read. A classic too.

Also check out Chuck Palahniuk. He's genius! I suggest Invisible Monsters, Diary, and Survivor.
Reply:well my sister im reading a book now that really really has gotten me so intrested im cherokee and apache but this book focuses on my cherokee side but its so great its called voices of my ancestors its great teachs alot about our tribes prior to when the whites invaded... very good

Reply:I just finished Year Of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. It is subtitled a novel of the plague. Its quite good. She also recently published People Of The Book - very different but also quite good.
Reply:I highly recommend anything by these authors:

Clive Cussler

Terry Pratchett

William Martin

Christopher Moore

Jack Du Brul

James Michener

Neil Gaiman

Laura Joh Rowland
Reply:I love all of Meg Cabot and Sophie Kinsella's books. I am in the process of reading Emily Giffins books now. They are really great authors.
Reply:The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde.
Reply:John Connoly's "The Book of Lost Things" is really really good. It's like a modern-ish fairy tale about a young boy who goes to this other world to find his mother who died of cancer. Even though it's like a fairy tale and it's about a little boy, it's geared to adults. It is a little dark but not terribly so.

Also, I really enjoy just about anything by Charles de Lint. It's contemporary fantasy and while not written by a Native American, there are a lot of Native American themes.

Since you like Piers Anthony and are obviously a fan of humor, I recommend "Lamb" by Christopher Moore. It's about Jesus' childhood pal Biff. It's absolutely hilarious! (Just make sure you're willing to have a sense of humor when it comes to the Bible. ;))

"The Wild Reel" by Paul Brandon

and

"War For the Oaks" by Emma Bull are also worth the time it takes to read them. :)

Which Blush Shade? I Cant decide!?

okay i have quite pale skin and black hair....and i cant choose which colour would suit me best.

Plum orchid or peony pink

http://avonshop.co.uk/shop/product.asp?s...

btw im looking for a colour i can wear during the day..:)

Thankyou,

Which Blush Shade? I Cant decide!?
Get the paler colour. You don't want to shock your pale skin... especially for a day look.
Reply:peony pink. for the day time you dont want your blush too dark, for evenings the darker is better.
Reply:The plum one if you ask me! I think the pink would make you look tooo much like a doll.
Reply:rpeony pink for everyday where (and maybe a bit more)but for affairs plum orchid

so in the end i say the peony pink
Reply:I rekon pink will look cool with ur black hair! :)
Reply:plum orchid may be a bit dark for your colouring, i reccomend peony pink. dark hair and very fair skin is striking and the plum may look a little harsh, you want to lighten up your face. also, did you ever consider that bronzer may be better than blush? just a hint will give you that 'sunkissed' look
Reply:I have black hair, and not real pale skin, but I use a pink that I got from Hot Topic...... Hope this helps you.... : )
Reply:I like the peony pink better if you have light skin. If you're tanned or darker then go for the Plum orchid. Good luck!
Reply:peony pink because if you have pale skin, the orchid will look too dark, and that would look very ugly

go for a light color, it brings brightness to the face
Reply:Peony Pink Because you have a lighter shade of skin . Plum orchard is too bright it would be very noticable from afar and close up. GO For Peony~

I moved into an old house, which I adore ,but the yard..YUCK! HELP!?

The front yard isn't to bad , but the back yard is a total mess. I've cleared all the leaves and broken glass, tree limbs. I planted grass seed, but nothing has happened. I started on he side yard. Peony and tulip and some other plants are coming up. I cut back a honeysuckle bush in the front yard. Should I plant more grass seed in the back yard ? I would also like to have a small vegetable garden in the back. I also have a compose pile. Please help me with this problem. Thanks.

I moved into an old house, which I adore ,but the yard..YUCK! HELP!?
Hey Diva Mama,

It sounds like you are taking on the problems a little at a time. That is exactly what you need to do. Take pictures now, so you remember what it 'use to look like', and you will feel better.

You asked so many questions at once, it will be hard to advise you. For a garden, find a sunny spot that you can landscape around and put in some raised beds. See the mother earth site below. Compost is yet another story, but will work well with a raised bed. So, think of them arranged in a cooperative manner in your yard.

Lawn is another story. Is it sunny, shady, northern, southern, wet, sandy, clay, etc. Obviously something was wrong with the orginal lawn, so that has to be fixed. See the presentation on turfgrasses from Clemson, below.

I love honeysuckle, but you do need to keep it in check. It does sound like you are already on your way, you have momentum anyway.
Reply:Sounds like you have it altogether, yes put some more seed down.

Find a sunny spot in the back of the yard for the veggies.

You can buy those edging stones from home improvement stores that kind of fit together to make a bed for the veggies

Then a nice birdbath will give you entertainment the whole year just watching all the birds come to drink and bathe.

I would not put bird feeders up as they bring mice
Reply:Guessing you're somewhere midwest or it doesn't get hot like a down south state for very long. What's left in the yard?

After the yard is cleared as well as you can, you might try covering it in topsoil about an inch thick. This will help us start from square one. Next, I would put some CHEAP ANNUAL ryegrass down or some red or fine fescue. Might not be the best for the long haul but once these are coming up, they can set the stage for anything else you might want to grow. These grasses will come up quick and be just enough to hold a little nutrients in the soil and shade for more seeds.

After you've done this, have we got a sunny yard or a more shadey yard. A sunny yard might work better with a mix of bluegrass and tall fescue. Its ok to put more PERENNIAL ryegrass down. Its a good mixer and can sometimes go either way. The other grasses before mentioned can take more of a beating from the sun, once they come up and they need less water. The bad news is that they take awhile to come in. Once they come in, you are golden.

If its a shadey yard. Bluegrass might work as will perennial ryegrass. But this time you are going to go with a mix that might have those but more with a Red or Fine fescue. These are more shady grasses and more acid loving grasses and good for near any trees.

The best time to seed is in the fall. This doesn't mean you can TRY in the spring but when you try, make sure its a little lower on the amount you spread. Still go through the motions of laying the dirt, possibly aerating, spreading the seeds you intend to use and then finally use a fertilizer that is higher in the middle number (phospherous). This is usually found in a good "starter fertilizer". This middle number is important because it will help you establish root growth. Good root growth is key when restarting a lawn.

Would love to see pictures of what the current project is. Tell me how everything goes. I can adjust sights on your problem by what more I am told. This is a problem that might take awhile but be patient. All will be good. Would love to further help you just be patient, I'm on the other side of the world right now until February next year (09).
Reply:Congratulations on moving into your new home.

Grass seed needs to be kept moist until it starts growing and then needs watering at least once per week for 30 to 40 minutes per each section.

Another problem you might be having are birds eating your seeds. Go to a plant nursery (not a gardening center) and talk to the manager or a knowledgeable clerk that knows all about grass. Don't be shy, they are there to help you. OR call a landscaper and let them take care of your yard for you. It is worth every penny. Be sure to ask them the proper way to take care of your lawn.

A vegetable garden needs all day sun or at least six hours. Lots and lots of water without fail.

A good watering schedule each week will give you a pretty lawn and wonderful veggies.

Happy gardening to you.
